Canada's new PM calls snap election. Thanks to Trump, the once-dead Liberal Party is now alive [1]

The Liberal Party's prospects in Canada were once bleak. After nine years as Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau's popularity was low and fading fast. Canada's Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre , was riding a rising right-wing tide. The only question was the size of their majority after the next election — which was scheduled for October 20, 2025.

Trudeau, who had accepted that his future was not in elected office, resigned . The Liberals elected Mark Carney as their new leader — which, because of Canada's parliamentary system, also made him, ex officio, the PM. His future seemed assured. He would emerge from the next general election as the leader of the loyal opposition.

However, this change in Liberal leadership occurred as Trump leveled tariffs on our best friends and Northern neighbours. That was bad enough. Bozo added that he would make Canada the 51st state. Canadians considered this option. They declared the suggestion the dumbest idea the idiot in the Oval had ever offered.

Polls, which had once assured the Conservatives they would soon be in charge, gave way to polls showing that Trump's preening but unmoored ambition had breathed life into the moribund Liberals. Trump's dumbass anti-Canadian sovereignty rants was the kiss of life for the Northern Left.

In January, around Trump's inauguration, Conservatives had a 26-point lead. Today, they are in a statistical tie with the Liberals.

Carney, who had already united the Liberals — he had received 85% of his party's leadership votes — saw the political winds shift. Voters who had said 'no' or 'non' to Liberals at the helm, now reconsidered if they wanted a Trump-adjacent PM in Ottawa.

This reversal of the right's fortune has led Carney to call a snap election on April 28 — five weeks from now. (God, if only American elections were as efficient.) Good for him. Fortune favors the bold. Poilievre once celebrated his political kinship with Trump. Now, he's trying to pretend that never happened. Carney's strategy is to have an election while Polilievre's embrace of the anti-Canadian menace is fresh in the voters' minds.

Trump has done his best to help Poilievre. On Wednesday, he said , "I'd rather deal with a liberal than a conservative." He added, "The Conservative that's running is stupidly no friend of mine." Poilievre tried to take advantage by claiming that this made him independent of Trump. At a press conference in Sudbury, Ont., Poilievre responded to Trump's remarks , touting himself as a "strong leader" and a "tough guy."

However, Canadians know that Trump is a liar. Carney should be able to swat this away. After all, on November 6, 2024, the day after Trump's election, Poilievre tweeted .

"Congratulations to Donald J. Trump on his election as the 47th President of the United States. The U.S. is Canada's best friend and biggest trading partner, and I will work with the President to benefit both countries. My mission: save our jobs."

That has not aged well.

In addition, Carney is a centrist Liberal with expertise in both finance and dealing with dumb conservative policies. He was Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 fiscal crisis — he received rave reviews. And he was Governor of the Bank of England in the aftermath of the Brexit vote. Which, until Trump's elections, had been the worst self-inflicted political wound an English-speaking country had ever perpetrated.

He is the kind of man the left needs to get out from under the conservative insanity that has inflected America and spilled over into Europe.
