The Old What? [1]

“Here’s my hope … after this election, when the Republican Party expels the turd of Donald Trump, it will go back to being the old Republican Party,"

Uh, yeah. The Grand Old Party. That. When Democrats and Republicans routinely met across the aisle not only in their hallowed chambers when doing the work of the people but after work in favorite watering holes and restaurants—maybe even enjoying a concert at the Kennedy Center together.

Except that’s not possible anymore. Forever. The GOP exists except in name only. The Democratic Party lives on in isolation. There is no honorable opponent (begging the question of when there last was one) across the aisle with whom to hammer out satisfying compromises that address the problems of the nation. Across the aisle are either committed cult members or those pretending to be cult members cowering in fear. Either way, they are all Republicans in name only, and however this era of insanity ends when two megalomaniacal malignant narcissists allied with the country’s mortal enemy have inexplicably become co-presidents who dream of becoming co-emperors of the world (except one of them will have to go, of course, and it’s obvious who that will be once ultimate power is in his grasp), the GOP is not going to emerge from the ashes, and I don’t imagine the Democratic Party that you (Chuck Shurmer) imagine as existing now or in some ideal future will exist.

Time to embrace the moment—the present—and face reality. Once Krasnov is gone, those Republicans you pine for are not going to magically reappear. And those Republicans in name only who are currently alive and sitting across the aisle only want one thing: for you and all Democrats to be erased from history, along with democracy, and in the once hallowed chambers you idealize, they will hail King Krasnov. They are the enemy. They are your enemy. Deal with it.
