No Savior Is On The Way [1]

Sometimes we can over simplify situations or falsely reduce them to binary choices that exclude other viable options. In the case of where we find ourselves with regards to the Trump administration’s authoritarian takeover of the government we can look to really only one remaing option of resistance, and that’s the United States Supreme Court. It’s a waste of energy to complain about the Democrats or think Congress itself is going to stop any of this. Short of impeachment they have no realistic role to play under these circumstance even if Republican leadership were inclined to step in. Which they aren’t.

I’m not being pessimistic or bleak here. This is the reality we are faced with. The lower courts can issue orders, yet they are always appealable. The executive branch has many unitary powers that the other branches can’t interfere with or restrict. Some “war powers” remain on the books going back to the 1700s. It comes down to the interpretation by Federal judges of the laws cited by the administration as they apply under these specific circumstances. It’s for the courts to decide if they are warranted. The Trump administration has access to an army of lawyers who appear to be constitutionally savvy. This is not like the first term when he surrounded himself with Rudy Giuliani like characters.

Whoever is directing this knows what they are doing. We know it’s not Trump, he’s not intellectually capable of anything strategic beyond transactional malfeasance. No, there’s a ideological bent behind this that has found a President willing to go along with it because he’s convinced he is most important component. In a way he is because it is the power of the office he holds that makes it possible.

Trump’s pathology, which resembles that of a sociopath, is what makes him so valuable to those driving this takeover. His insatiable narcissistic need for the validation makes him easy to manipulate. Narcissists can also be capricious so they must constantly be looking for ways to feed the beast. Make concessions that maintain the illusion that he commands all. The tarrifs for example are a capitulation and an inconvenience they must live with. I suspect he will withdraw them when a time comes that he claim some sort imaginary victory.

So how do we get out of this? Ultimately it needs to collapse under its own weight. Fail in such spectacular fashion that it permiates his base of supporters and makes even their lives miserable. Until then we will be forced to endure the incremental destruction of democratic and societal norms. Things will have to get to a breaking point. How long will it take? If we look to Russia as an example, it can stretch into decades.

If Trump regime breaks through the last line of defense presented by SCOTUS they are certainly coming for the election processes. Don’t think there’s some Democrat somewhere in the wings that is likely to stop this. There isn’t.

Bernie Sanders, who I agree with on almost everything, is no match for this situation, anymore than liberal champion McGovern was running against Nixon was in 1972. Nixon ended up winning 49 states.

This is going to have to play itself out. It will collapse eventually. If the court can’t hold it, I fear it will be awhile.
