What Schumer left unsaid..... [1]

First, Schumer did the right thing, and said the wrong thing about it, looking weak and pathetic in the process. But he did the right thing, and took the fall for his party.

What Schumer likely realized, and left unsaid, is that Trump and Musk want the government shut down — permanently.

I have seen articles recently that it took Hitler 53 days to turn Germany’s democracy into a dictatorship. 4 weeks after Hitler took power, the Reichstag, their Parliament building, burned down. Hitler used this to assist the Nazis to take suspend civil liberties and seize total power in Germany.

What would happen if the Federal government shut down? The answer is likely that the GOP would keep it that way. The worst case scenario would be that the Federal Government, and Congress, would be shut down indefinitely — forever — and that the Republican Congress would legislate itself out of existence. The governement would drown in a bathtub, and anything that had to be done would be privatized.

As I wrote to a friend at the time:

“W ho has the cards? Once the government is shut down, does it reopen? Or do we have a Reichstag moment? The Capitol does not have to burn for Congress and the federal government to be shut down indefinitely. And if it is, what kind of damage can Musk and Voldemort conjure? If that turns out to be exactly what they want, then we have no leverage in negotiation at all. Dems have to weigh the consequences of an awful bill that gives way too much away to Voldemort and Musk, with the possibility that if the government shuts down, it could be worse because Voldemort and Musk might be thrilled to have a monolithic President with no Congress ever again. Beware of unintended consequences.”

But Schumer could not say that.

First, he did not want to give them the idea, in the unlikely event that they were not planning for this.

Second, if the other side wants the result to a shut-down, there are no cards with which to negotiate.

This may, in fact, have been the best of all possible worst-options.

Unfortunately, in his announcement, he sounded weak and pathetic. It didn’t have to be that.
