The government spends an average of $35,578 per year for every person who must endure chronic homelessness. "People struggling with homelessnes on average visit the emergency room five times per year, which costs $3,700 or $18,500 per year for the average person and $44,400 spent per year for the highest users of emergency departments. People struggling with homelessness cost, on average, 3 nights per visit in the hospital which can cost over $9,000. Homelessness drops one's average life expectancy to 50 years, down from the non-homeless average of about 78 years. Some estimates place annual homelessness deaths at upwards of 13,000 people.
