The Guardian reports that a French research scientist slated to attend an academic conference in Houston was denied entry at a US airport on March 9th after Immigration officers searched his cell phone messages. The officers claim that the scientist had exchanged “hateful and conspiratorial messages with colleagues about the Trump administration.” This claim runs counter to the statement of the French Minister of Higher Education and Research, Philippe Baptiste, who averred that the scientist in question had merely criticized the US administration’s scientific research policy. The Minister, himself, has been an outspoken critic of the massive cuts to scientific research at the behest of DOGE. Read the full report here: www.theguardian.com/...
We have clearly returned to the days of Senator McCarthy’s red scare interrogations. There was joke from that time about a hapless trade unionist who was asked if he was a communist sympathizer. The union member responded that he was a dedicated anti-communist and the interrogator decreed, “Off with your head, we in the United States, do not tolerate any type of communist.”
We have once again become the joke of the world due to the Administration’s disregard for the First Amendment. It is entirely possible that the cell phone messages of citizens will also be perused by overzealous law enforcement personnel taking orders from our President who thinks himself a King. Folks, whither our democracy?
