Today’s summary of Canada biting back
ITEM 1:
Canada monthly vehicle border crossings to USA down 25% — lowest Feb since COVID
Statistics from both the Canadian and American federal governments show a sudden dramatic drop in Canadian vehicles visiting the U.S.A. — a devastating decline for American border towns that rely on Canadian day-trippers and weekend visitors to keep local retail and hospitality businesses profitable.
A Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) story cites U.S. Customs and Border Protection data showing year-over-year numbers surging from October to January only to drop off sharply in February in the face if Trump-ordered tariffs and and repeated threats to squeeze the Canadian economy until the country agreed to became America’s 51st state.
CBC quotes an American immigration lawyer based in Blaine, Washington, minutes south of the American border. “The decline in Canadian day trippers is evident at every turn… you can see it in the Costco parking lot, at Trader Joe's. Canadians are voting with their wallets right now. With the rhetoric coming from Trump — people just don't want to come down here.
“51st state taunts, the tariff threats and the reports of Canadians being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are all driving people away.”

ITEM 2:
Tesla presence completely banned from Canada’s largest auto show over concerns for “public safety and security”
Senior officials at the Vancouver International Auto Show cancelled all participation by Tesla after the Musk-owned carmaker refused a request to withdraw voluntarily. Senior officials at the show are concerned that the violence recently directed at Tesla cars and dealerships across North America has created a public safety risk that they could not ignore.
Tesla owner Elon Musk cannot escape his close links to American President Donald Trump, who has infuriated Canadians by imposing stiff tariffs and by suggesting the country be annexed by the United States as its 51st state.
The five-day car show, sponsored by a local auto-dealers’ trade group, attracts more than 100,000 people each year. The show’s executive director said this a was the first time in his three years with the organization that any auto-maker had been turned away. However “[In] light of the recent escalating events throughout North America, as we're getting closer [to our show], we're seeing a spike."

ITEM 3:
More evidence that Canada’s grassroots’ “buy Canadian” movement is biting U.S. business
Canada’s Globe & Mail looks at further, fresh evidence that a Canadian grassroots boycott of American goods and services is “already leaving a sizable mark on American business.”
The president of the American National Tour Association said there had been an “astronomical” (and unexpected) drop off in the number of Canadian tourists booking group tours in the U.S., citing one operator whose new group bookings have dropped from about 20 each week to just one or two, and another who had to scrap every planned Canadian group tour for the next three months because of cancellations by of cancellations.
Several operators told her that Trump’s rhetoric about making Canada the 51st state has been the “deciding factor” for many of the Canadian customers avoiding U.S. tavel.

The U.S. Travel Association warned in February that even a 10 per cent drop in Canadian visitors would lead to more than $2.1-billion in spending losses and a threat to 14,000 jobs.
