Women's History Month. And how I learned about it in Church Worship Service. [1]

As my regular readers know I have been attending Northbrae Community Church for a while and the service yesterday was Celebrating Women’s History Month. All the songs for the service were written by women, the readings were written by women. The in unison recitation of the Lord’s Prayer was written by a women. And most importantly the sermon delivered by Rev.Christy Ramage was on topic.

In the sermon Rev. Christy told us about three women that embodied compassion and served as role models. One was biblical, one was mythological and one was a real person. The biblical one was from the story of the woman whose daughter was very ill and she asks Jesus to heal her.

Here is a link to the sermon video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF2oYZ5a5HE. And below is a partial transcript of the part about the three women. Note, I edited the text slightly for better understanding.

To begin with a Biblical woman she is found in two of the gospels one in Matthew and one in Mark she is mentioned. And she's unusual in that Jesus responds to her in a way that he doesn't normally respond to people. And this has made her very famous throughout time so the story is as as it's depicted in the gospels is that she is a woman whose daughter is very ill and she comes to Jesus and asks Jesus to cure her daughter but the catch is that she is outside of the nation of Israel she is understood as a foreigner so not someone that Jesus initially would respond.

-

So what happens is that this as the story unfolds she comes to Jesus says please please please cure my daughter and the initial response that Jesus gives her according to scripture is that he just ignores her doesn't say anything to to her just pretend she hasn't spoken and then the disciples say why don't you just ask her to go because she's screaming at you and kind of disturbing all of our mental health please please Jesus just ask her to go.

-

Rather than asking her to go Jesus says to her basically I here for the people of Israel you cannot take food for the children and throw it to the dogs so he doesn't ask her to to go but he insults her calling her a dog basically because she's not part of the nation of Israel and is outside of the realm that normally he would help people but she persists through his silence through his insult. And she finally says to him even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the children's table and Jesus says to her finally okay I get you I'll help you I will cure your daughter.

-

The point of the story on women's history month is that she persisted nevertheless she persisted and there's this sense in which she met obstacle after obstacle after obstacle she was ignored she was insulted and still she persisted and persevered until finally she was able to be heard.

-

We are living in very strange times and part of the power that this women can this woman can give us I believe is to persist through whatever it is that is coming we need to be able to persist and to trust that finally through our persistence we will be able to come to a place of change and intervention and healing and hope and this can happen for this country it can happen individually but to hear that voice I believe is very important.
