Trump Tariffs Will Hit Red States The Hardest. [1]

NOTE: I’m writing this diary to deal with the emotional turmoil of my Mom’s impending passing. It gives me something else to try and focus on.
This will be a theoretical FAFO diary for red state voters with regards to Trump’s tariffs. I say “theoretical” because we don’t know if Trump will really go ahead with the April 2nd tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and reciprocal tariffs on the EU. Trump may once again change his mind at the last possible moment and delay his one and only tool for trade and international “diplomacy.” But it appears the corrupt and stupid legacy media is starting to take stock of “Who will be hurt by Trump’s tariffs?”, and the answer is everyone, especially those in red states.
Granted, this is all from Newsweek, but it does make some sense.
PROXIMITY TO BORDER STATES
States that share a border with Canada and Mexico will be hit hard because of proximity and the amount of trade that passes through those states. Some of the states are blue such as California, New York, and Minnesota. However, the others listed for economic pain are Arizona, Texas, and the lovely swing state of Michigan.
Some of the states are blue such as California, New York, and Minnesota. However, the others listed for economic pain are According to this article, Texas does 200 billion dollars of trade with Mexico, California with 40 billion, and Arizona with 20 billion. That ain’t chump change.
FARMING AND MANUFACTURING STATES
From a Canadian economist by the name of Kristen Hopewell:
She said the "farm belt" states of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin will be "severely hit" commenting: "Roughly 85 percent of the potash used by American farmers for fertilizer, for example, comes from Canada. Trump's tariffs on potash and other inputs are significantly increasing costs for American farmers—at the same time they face counter-tariffs from Canada, Mexico and China, which are their three biggest export markets. American farmers are being squeezed on both sides." Hopewell also said states particularly reliant on manufacturing and the auto industry are vulnerable. She said: "Tariffs on steel and aluminum will raise costs for manufacturers across the U.S., undermining their competitiveness. This will hurt the biggest hubs of American manufacturing—California, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, Wisconsin and North Carolina—hardest."
Emphasis is mine.
Now, those steel and aluminum tariffs are not theoretical but real.
If Trump goes through with those tariffs on Canadian goods, potash will become very expensive for farmers who are already facing low commodity prices. And then there are the retaliatory tariffs expected from everybody if Trump goes through with all his tariff threats. As I have stated before, Mexico buys a lot of American corn, and Mexico will put a tariff on American corn in retalition.
Kentucky farmers will love that, considering their top two crops are corn and soybeans. And the Chinese are buying less soybeans from American farmers. They switched over to Brazil for soybeans from Trump’s earlier tariffs on Chinese goods.
But all Americans are going to take a hit. It just appears that MAGA voters are going to take an even bigger hit. And given my current mood, I don’t feel the least bit sorry if they get fucked.
