Democratic members of congress stand at 21/68 approval, 40/49 among Democrats [1]

The numbers speak for themselves. This is the lowest approval rating for Democrats in congress of all time. Harry Enten of CNN says “these numbers are in the trash bin of history”. So for those like Chuck Schumer who think voters would have blamed Democrats for a shutdown (they wouldn’t have — Enten goes on to point out that by a 53/32 margin voters would have blamed Trump and the Republicans), what exactly is being protected here?
Further data from the Quinnipiac poll: 77% of Democratic voters say their party isn’t opposing Trump enough, as opposed to 4% who say they are opposing Trump too much.
Voters hate Democratic leaders because they are too often seen as pusillanimous turds who stand for nothing but keeping their own power. It’s easy to cynically believe that Schumer wanted to end the shutdown situation quickly to he wouldn’t miss time on his book tour.
So what can we do? Keep up the pressure. Don’t stop calling your Senators just because that vote is over. Demand that they support new leadership in the Senate. Tell them you support a primary of Dick Durbin in 2028 which will send the signal to all senators that cowardice will not be rewarded. And most importantly, hit the streets, whether it’s at your local Tesla protest, anti-Trump protest, town hall, protest of Schumer’s book tour, or whatever. DEMAND BETTER.
Our democracy is in the process of being dismantled. Us Democrats may genuinely disagree about the best courses of action in the face of this stark fact. But what isn’t arguable is that inaction is deadly. Pressure your representatives to do better, organize, attend protests, whatever it takes. There is no time to waste.
