An Existential Threat... Then act like it! [1]

You’ve read the stories, seen the headlines, “Democrats in disarray!” We watched last week the confusion over the senate vote on the just passed budget CR (continuing Resolution). And we’ve participated in, or at least heard, the debate among Democrats, independents and the left leaning polity. Now here we are after the senate vote, some angry, some hand wringing, some wanting to drop out. What’s next?
Well, it’s time to either fish of cut bait. Time to separate rethoric and reality.
For over eight years now the leadership of left side of the political spectrum has been raising money and recruits by asserting that the country is facing a “existential crisis.” All through the last election season fund raisers, politicians, talkers, essayists, even former presidents have been banging on the alarm bell. “The U.S. is heading for, or in the midst of, an existential crisis.”
In the current context that word “existential” means “ a threat to a people’s existence or survival.” That’s it - Living or dying, Life or death.
If that’s true, and not just a tag line on the unending stream of political money solicitations, then it’s time to put up or shut up! If we’re threatened with the end of our democracy, the end of our freedoms, then why the f**k don’t we, and/or the Democratic Party, act like it? If you threaten my existence brother, you best believe we’re at war. So where is our war time leadership, our war time cabinet? Where is our war time consigliari? Why are the politicians acting like this is just more of the same old political manuvering. Where’s our post 9/11, post Pearl Harbor, mobilization? WTF are we doing?
Look, if the left wing, liberal, progressive, democrat (call it what you will) part of our nation seriously want to stop the current regime, it’s time to be blunt, and clear about ourselves.
The debate last week over whether to vote for the CR turned on whether the folks who just took over our government would get “more power?” Really?
Where was the call to the barricades, the Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill response? The “we will fight them on the beaches, fight them in the hills”, call for action?
Why would we care about the enemy which is trying to end us getting more angry, grabbing more power? If you are trying to end me, I’m not giving you an inch of territory, or an ounce of forebarence! Where, for God’s sake is our call to arms? We need, must have “war time” leaders, thinkers, planners. We need to stop this crap about “we don’t have leverage” and go full bore. No leverage? Throw rocks! Put up the barricades! Down tools and Strike!
If you truly believe that this is an existential crisis, then stop trying to be nice, or reasonable, or collegial! If you believe they are trying to end our constitution, end our institutions, end our democacy it’s time to act like it. This ain’t bean bag. This is life or death! Stop with the rationalizations, the trying to be “reasonable”, the wait and see.
It’s time to reorganize, select, elect, wartime leadership. People who know that wars break the china, destroy homes and families, and leave rubble in their wake. The time for an all out defense of our country is now! Not in six months, or the next election. NOW! It’s is time to organize, mobilize and strategize, with serious intent. incrementalism be damned!
If you truly believe that this regime poses an existential threat to our country — ACT LIKE IT!
