This is what we are dealing with.
Patrushev has also been providing history lessons about Finland lately, contending that the Finnish population is actually pro-Russian, and it's only the elites that are against Moscow's aims of global dominance. They all once lived happily together in the Grand Duchy of Finland!
This kind of fantasy thinking underlies Russia's effort to destroy Ukraine, and it's hitting up against some hard truths, which is that all countries on the Baltic, except for the Russian Federation are now in NATO. For those of you who still consider Finland to be some kind of safe, gray, neutral space, and Estonia *more at risk*, think again.
The issue with the thinking in the Kremlin is that it doesn't match reality. This is why their war to take over Ukraine has largely been a failure. They have managed to take some border cities, but the rest has been basically a war of scorched earth and total destruction, rendering any territory "gained" as uninhabitable. Where are these pro-Russian Ukrainians who are just dying to be ruled by Putin?
It's clear that Putin thought he would be welcomed by little girls with flowers. This fantasy thinking is also at work at the White House, where Trump thinks Greenlanders want to join the US, even though the heads of all the parties in parliament just said explicitly that they do not want to join the US.
