1100 leaders of Indivisible chapters from around the nation voted today to demand Chuck Schumer’s removal from the office of Majority Leader. In an on-line forum at 3PM EST this Saturday, Ezra Levin and Noah Greenberg laid out the case for this vote, detailing step by step their growing sense that Schumer was not rising to the challenge of Trump’s second term. They opened a separate chat line for questions, with participants voting on which questions should be answered first. They explained that they had queried New York State chapters before the national meeting, and gotten strong support from the Empire State. Then the vote was taken, with over 90% voting. The tally was 91% supporting the call for Schumer’s removal, 7% undecided, and 2% in opposition.
I was present, casting one of the “Yes” votes. I’m by nature an institutionalist, more deferential than many to Party leadership. Not in this case. The rules have changed, if any rules survive at all, and a line had to be drawn.
Indivisible USA will soon release a press statement. Local chapters are encouraged to draft their own, even if in opposition to the national consensus. The previously scheduled “Hands Off” mobilization will proceed as planned on April 5. Levin and Greenberg cut short any discussion of primary challenges. That is a matter for discussion by chapters in each state, not by the national organization.
I’m headed for bed now after a frantic afternoon of discussions with my fellow Oklahoma Indivisibles, who are scrambling to formulate our own response. I’ll leave others to debate the issue on this site, but was surprised to find no coverage and thought everyone should know.
