Democratic Congress Member Maxine Dexter– When Condemning Demagogue/Dictator Donald’s Actions, It’s Time to Use the “F” Word February 12, 2025

It’s ridiculous to say that the Democrats are not resisting Demagogue/Dictator Donald’s awful actions. Despite what many in the media are yammering, Democrats, both at the grass roots and at the legislative level, are fighting back. In the Senate, as “The Hill” has noted, Christopher Murphy (D-CT) is taking a strong lead attacking Donald’s and his cultist party members’ policies that favor the top 1%, and staking out a strong Democratic message that appeals to most members of his party. Other “Team Blue” Congress Members and Senators are joining rank-and-file demonstrators throughout the country in demonstrations against the Donald Trump/Elon Musk “co-presidency” draconian budget cuts and personnel purges at numerous federal agencies.

On February 11, 2025 there was a D.C. “Rally to Save The Civil Service.” It took place outside the Capitol. It was sponsored by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). At this demonstration, some of the most prominent Democratic Trump fighters appeared and spoke. They included Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Cong. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Cong. Donald Norcross (D-NJ), and Cong. Maxine Dexter (D-OR). Rep. Norcross stated, “You can’t make ugly pretty. I’m from Jersey, so I look at it a little differently. I say, F’ck Trump!’” When Rep. Norcross finished this comment, Rep. Maxine Dexter declared, “That’s exactly right, there is no way I can follow that mic drop.” She added, “I’ve been told I have 30 seconds, so I am going to tell you–I don’t swear very well in public very well, but we have to f’ck Trump! Please don’t tell my children that I just did that.” Congress Member Dexter’s first House bill was the “Stop Musk Act.” This legislation would, in her words, “protect federal employees from retaliation for preventing, resisting, and circumventing Elon Musk’s illegal actions.” Meet Cong. Maxine Dexter.

First-term Congress Member Maxine Dexter (52) currently represents Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District (CD). The Beaver State’s 3rd CD constitutes, as the 2022 Political Almanac of American Politics notes, the greater Portland area. The OR 3rd includes most of Portland. The Beaver 3rd includes nearly three-fourths of Multnomah County east of Portland and a small part of suburban Clackamas County south of that city. After the 2022 redistricting, the 3rd gave up downtown Portland and neighboring areas on both sides of the Willamette River. The 3rd also gave up the southwest corner of Multnomah County and northwest parts of Clackamas County. In exchange, this CD received a largely rural area from Hood River County that stretched from Mount Hood to the Columbia River. Clackamas and Hood River constitute 15% of the present OR 3rd. In Gresham, east of Portland, semiconductor plants have expanded. Politically, although the Clackamas part of the district tilts “Red,” the OR 3rd is “Royal Blue,” with a D+22 Cook Partisan Voting Index (PVI) score. Wikipedia notes that this D+22 score makes the 3rd the most Democratic district in Oregon and the third most Democratic district in the Pacific Northwest.

Maxine Elizabeth (Johnson) Dexter, a native of Bothell, Washington, stated that she grew up in a tumultuous home environment and faced financial struggles from a young age. Despite these challenges, Dexter said she was aided and supported by teachers and neighbors who became her mentors. These individuals instilled in her a deep-seated commitment to care for those around her. Dexter has a strong connection to labor unions. At 16, she began working at Albertsons as a UFCW union member. She noted that the wages, health care benefits, and job security she received from that union, along with student loans, enabled her to become the first member of her family to graduate from college. Dexter received her BA in Political Science and Communication from the University of Washington and her medical degree from the University of Washington’s School of Medicine. Dexter served her medical residency in Aurora, Colorado and moved to Portland, Oregon with her husband and their two children in 2008. She, like many who moved to Portland, fell in love with that city’s natural beauty. She worked as a pulmonologist at Kaiser Permanente in Hillsboro, OR.

Dexter stated that she was inspired to run for the OR House of Representatives in 2020 following the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court controversial hearings in which he was accused of sexual assault. Dexter won the Democratic primary to succeed retiring fellow Democrat Mitch Greenlick. Greenlick died two days before the primary occurred and Dexter was appointed to finish out his term. During the COVID pandemic, Dexter treated patients with this disease and wrote a letter to OR’s Gov. Kate Brown urging her to close the schools in April, 2020. Dexter was re-elected in 2022. In the OR legislature, Dexter strengthened abortion protections and closed dangerous loopholes in gun laws. She also introduced and helped get signed into law a bill expanding access to the opioid antidote medication naloxone and allowed first responders to distribute that drug to members of the public. In 2023, as chair of the House Housing and Homelessness Committee, Dexter was credited with helping pass a $200 million spending bill on housing and homelessness issues.

When incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer decided to retire, Dexter ran in the primary to succeed him. She defeated two other candidates, including Susheela Jayapal, the sister of prominent U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal. In the Novembeer, 2024 general election, Dexter clobbered the GOP nominee Joanna Harbour by 42.5 percentage points, 67.7%-25.2%.

In the House, Cong. Dexter supports the transition to a single-payer health care system. She is in favor of greater protections for employees. She is also an advocate for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increased money for public housing, as well as stricter gun control. Dexter opposes efforts to condition U.S. aid to Israel amid its ongoing war with brutal Hamas. However, she supports a cease-fire and delivery of humanitarian aid.

Cong. Maxine Dexter is an up-and-coming lawmaker to watch. Yes, she forcefully called out Trump. However, cursing the Trump-Musk gang will not be enough. Everything they do to hurt ordinary Americans must be fought even if Democrats, in the congressional minority, end up losing many of these battles. We must call, email, and write our Congress Members to oppose Trump 24/7. Every time “Team Blue” takes on Demagogue/Dictator Donald, we become stronger in the eyes of the voting public. Failure to oppose him makes us look weak, even in the eyes of our own base. Remember, all we need to do in Campaign 2026, is take back a net three seats to recapture the House. Keep resisting the Trump-Musk regime and then vote in droves to take back the House. Cursing feels good, but in the end, is no substitute for voting in droves which we failed to do in 2024. Voting is EVERYTHING! Our democracy depends upon it.
