DID Schumer Break a Deal and Stab Congressional Democrats In The Back? [1]

Just speaking for myself I’m still struggling to come to terms with what I see as the total and complete capitulation by 10 Senate Democrats in the face of Fascist evil and I’m trying to understand why. I’ve seen numerous takes on How supposedly, Schumer did the right thing, and how he was a very brave man. One such take came from President Trump himself.

So I guess, color me skeptical but I tend to find when Trump is praising your bravery, it’s usually not a good thing.

Not to mention I’ve seen legal threads explaining, how the rational Schumer used is, false and that the law regarding a shutdown would NOT have granted Musk the power Schumer claims it would have. But for now, I’ll avoid relitigating that part and ask as the purpose of this diary, did Schumer violate a deal in place with Congressional Democrats? Did he do this when some in swing Districts were taking a risky vote of unity to oppose the CR?

Here is AOC on the matter:

x Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House. We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication. They own what happens next. — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@aoc.bsky.social) 2025-03-14T23:18:01.737Z

That sure sounds to me like she is saying, a plan was worked out and that Schumer and pals, broke the deal after Congressional Democrats in Swing Districts had already stuck their necks out.

Can anyone explain to me how this is Good Leadership? Even if you think Schumer did the right thing on the shutdown, how is good to leave House Democrats twisting in the wind? Why wasn’t this position worked out and coordinated in advance?

Well, perhaps you don’t believe it is true, maybe AOC is being a bit misleading, but if that is true, why then did Nancy Pelosi’s take the rare step of rebuking fellow Democratic Leadership in Congress? Why did Jefferies offer up no support when asked if a change in Senate leadership is needed? Because those don’t seem like the actions of leaders whose colleague took a principled vote. Those seem like leaders who felt double crossed.

Look I don’t know Why Schumer did what he did. It is possible he is telling the truth and just decided it was a loser, I don’t buy that, but it is possible, or perhaps his Rich donors get cold feet about the market Crashing as George Conway suggested he has heard. Or perhaps, there is another reason. It doesn’t matter much at this point. He did it and now Musk and Trump have been given more power and more legitimacy to their actions.

I’ve heard a fair amount of lectures for years about how we needed to preserve the filibuster so that Democrats would be able to use it when they were in the minority and at the first meaningful vote they declined to do so.

I also know a good leader doesn’t break deals that screws over important allies. Schumer needs to go and soon. We are in the fight of our lives and real leadership is needed. And just to be clear I’m not telling anyone to give up in despair and go home. Even if you feel it right now. Fighting Fascism is always the right thing to do, and I believe we should continue even if stuck with Schumer as a leader.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t evaluate our leadership while doing so. That doesn’t mean we can’t put pressure on them to do the right thing that doesn’t mean we can’t change Generals if one proves ineffective. I’d argue in fact it is imperative to do so.
