Caturday Pootie Diary: It was a dark and stormy night [1]

Freddie lapped up some water from his dispenser, the cool water feeling good on his throat. He had been sleeping next to the human upstairs for a while and it had been thirsty work.
The night was much louder than usual, the rain beating down on the roof and windows in a steady patter. Freddie did not like it.
“Bad water,” he whispered to the good water in his dish.
A gentle reminder of how we do things: 🐱🐶🐦 Do not troll the diary. If you hate pootie diaries, leave now. No harm, no foul.
Please do share pics of your fur kids! If you have health/behavior issues with your pets, feel free to bring it to the community.
Pooties are cats; Woozles are dogs. Birds... are birds! Peeps are people.
Whatever happens in the outer blog STAYS in the outer blog. If you’re having “issues” with another Kossack, keep it “out there.” This is a place to relax and play; please treat it accordingly. There are some pics we never post: snakes, creepy crawlies, any and all photos that depict or encourage human cruelty toward animals. These are considered “out of bounds” and will not be tolerated. If we alert you to it, please remember that we do have phobic peeps who react strongly to them. If you keep posting banned pics...well then...the Tigress will have to take matters in hand. Or, paw.
The best thing to do about rain is to ignore it, Freddie remembered. He tried to do just that, prowling the floors of his home. Upstairs, the human slept, as ever oblivious to her environment at night.
Freddie gave an exasperated chuff. Silly human.
It really was lucky she had him.
The sound of the rain suddenly intensified. Freddie froze, listening, the fur of his belly brushing the hardwood.
As quickly as it had started, the rain relented, still falling but much softer. Freddie relaxed.
Freddie pounced on a cricket, trapping it with his paws. It chirped, alarmed, and he released it. He thought the cricket might be food, but he wasn’t really sure what to do about that. Besides, he still had some leftovers from his dinner should he get hungry.
He watched as the cricket escaped under the door to the mysterious place where the human stored her car and gave a little shrug. There would be other crickets, after all.
Once again, the rain grew loud outside, water hitting the house with great force. Freddie waited, but this time it did not let up.
“Oh, no!” he cried. He turned and raced for the stairs.
He smelled the human’s face, checking to see if she was awake. She wasn’t, which surprised Freddie. How could she sleep through that terrifying racket?
She suddenly twitched and opened her eyes. “Freddie?” she croaked. “What is it?”
He said nothing, waiting for her to hear.
“Oh, wow,” she said with a smile. “It’s really coming down. You okay? Not scared?”
“Not scared,” he lied. “I thought you might be and maybe you might want to hug me until you felt better.”
The human’s smile widened for some reason and she nodded. “That was kind of you. C’mere.” She wrapped and arm around him and pulled him toward her body. He would normally fight such an action, but he relaxed his body and allowed it, taking a moment to arrange his body against hers. She was warm and sleepy and he immediately started to purr.
“Thank you,” she whispered into his fur. “I’m glad I have you to comfort me when I’m scared of the rain.”
“Me too,” he agreed, making biscuits on the sheet under her arm. “I’d hate for you to be alone and scared.”
The human was fast asleep when the rain finally let up, her arm heavy around him. He felt a brief moment of worry for her. She was so defenseless and vulnerable like this.
He shook the worry off, knowing he was there to keep watch.
Freddie slipped out of her hold and stretched. “Good stretch,” he murmured to himself since she was too asleep to say it for him. He looked around, trying to decide what to do.
On the one paw, he could stay and sleep next to her, giving and taking comfort in the storm. On the other, he could patrol the house and make sure everything stayed as it should. “What to do?” he whispered, turning his body in a circle and curling up at her hip. “So much work for one kitty,” he said, resting his head on his paws and closing his eyes.
The rain continued to fall, sometimes growing heavy, sometimes going light. It didn’t stop even once to let a poor kitty sleep.
Freddie sighed and looked over at the human. She hadn’t moved in hours, blissfully unaware of the tempest outside.
He stood and walked over to her, climbing on top of her so she’d know he wanted to be petted.
She didn’t move.
He sat on her hip and stared, hard. She would sense him and wake up, he knew.
She didn’t move.
Freddie lifted a paw and gave her a smack like he did when she wasn’t sharing her meal.
“What…?” she choked out, startled and not quite awake. She twisted her head to look up at him. He stared down at her from his perch on her hip. “Oh, Freddie,” she said, reaching up to pet him. “You okay?”
He lowered himself to a crouch and she winced.
“Those paws are heavy on my ribs and this is not a good angle for petting,” she complained. He ignored her. She knew the routine; when he lay on top of her it meant he was to be petted. The angle didn’t matter.
The rain had finally stopped by the time the human’s alarm went off. Freddie lifted his head and watched as she felt around the blankets for the device. While she silenced the alarm he pondered how silly it was to sleep so deep you needed a machine to wake you up. What if there were predators?
The human looked at him. “Good morning,” she said.
“Human,” he said, nodding at her regally.
“It sure rained hard last night, eh? Were you too scared?”
He straightened. “I don’t get scared,” he sniffed.
She smirked at him.
“Anyway I made sure you were safe all night. So you’re welcome.”
She grinned. “I sure am lucky to have you,” she said.
“Don’t I know it.”
Happy Caturday, Peeps! We had three days of rain this last week and Freddie was not into it.
