Why I agree with Chuck [1]

I’ve just spent a few minutes reading several outrage diaries about Schumer. Not one of them gives a substantial reason to vote against the bill.
in chess, sometimes your opponent offers you a knight. Eagerly you take the knight, only to realize that on the next move later, your opponent exploits a new vulnerability to checkmate you.
Voting to shutdown the government is exactly what republicans want. It gives full responsibility to the democrats. Next the republicans can proceed by withholding social security checks, withholding everyone salaries, shutting Obamacare. It’s their dream. Shutting down the irs. (* note. A commenter wrote that social security checks would still come during a govt shutdown)
There is no advantage to Dems for a government shutdown. It’s not a point of leverage. The Dems will spend the next weeks as the stock market drops. Eventually the Dems will be forced to reopen the government with no concessions from republicans.
thats what Schumer realized. The republicans were offering him nothing. There was no negotiation here.
i guess one advantage of voting against the bill is that it registers the Democrats disapproval. See the knight sacrifice above. This will mean nothing and really what the average American will understand is that all the new problems are due to the Dems.
the situation in the House was a little different. In this case, failure to pass the bill would be attributed to republicans. Clearly the republicans didn’t want this responsibility.
so go ahead and rage at Schumer. And you can tell me that I’m playing by the old rules. But then tell me how this plays out, and find me any advantage except that the “American people will know that we are fighting for them”. Which I contend will truly read “Americans will hold us responsible for trainwreck”.
