Like Vichy France, we are a conquered nation [1]

I think perhaps the best way to make sense of what is happening to the U.S. right now is this: we are a defeated nation, a conquered nation. And by “we” I mean the United States (not the Democrats, or the left).
What happens to a defeated nation? The conqueror does what it will with it, concerned only with what it can plunder for its own benefit. The conqueror does not care if the things that make the conquered country strong and prosperous are maintained—its government, its economy, its alliances, its universities, its scientific infrastructure, its cultural centers, its military. If anything, the conqueror does its best to destroy these institutions, to ensure that the conquered nation is weakened, so that it cannot rise again.
This despoiling of the nation leads to anger and resistance, but the conqueror uses force and repression to shut that down. It does not care about the opinions or civil liberties of the conquered people. After all, they are a subjugated people. How dare they question the authority of the conqueror, after losing the war?
Not everyone in the conquered nation resist. Many prefer to collaborate. Many don’t feel that they have a choice. Some even welcome their new overlords, and say that the conquest was necessary to cleanse the country from its previous sins.
The model for what is happening is not Nazi Germany—it is Vichy France.
