In a 1954 letter to his brother, Edgar, President Eisenhower Warne of the political dangers of taking federal programs away from large numbers of Americas whether Social Security, Unemployment Insurance or Farm Programs. That same, Dwight Eisenhower signed into law the Agricultural Trade Development and Assistance Act — or Public Law (P.L.) 480 — an action which simultaneously created the Office of Food for Peace. Part of USAID, food for peace has provided US farmers with the means of exporting surplus products whether wheat or soybeans to overseas markets. With the freezing of US AID under DOGE created by Donald Trump with Elon as its head, farmers are able to sell their goods and in a domestic market saturated, are unable to earn income or make purchases from seeds to fertilizers. Trump whose support increased amongst farming counties in 2024 is harming his own constituents. With the various tariffs being imposed by Trump, farmers face additional issues including retaliatory tariffs from EU members or China, forcing them to make difficult decisions about crop output and purchases.

Overseas millions of people whether in Latin America, Asia or Africa face the specter of hunger. With abundant of food and resources, we as a nation can not shirk our responsibility to help those in need. The United States as the nation whom millions look towards for inspiration must carry the torch of hope. Therefore Republicans and Democrats must put aside their differences and heed the command of Isaiah--to "undo the heavy burdens . . . (and) let the oppressed go free."

Please contact your senators and representatives to urge them to ensure the abundance of our nation is shared with those in need. In a world of fear and scarcity let us remain beacon of hope.
