Where is the outrage? [1]

Pro-Palestinian rights protestor Mahmoud Khalil was seized by ICE last Saturday for exercising his constitutionally protected free speech rights. I don’t think you have to hold a strong position on the Gaza issue either way to have a major problem with this. As far as I know, only fourteen democrats have signed a letter demanding his release. I’m disappointed to learn that my new congressman Sam Liccardo is not among them. I just sent the following email to his office, and hope that others will use it as a template to do the same.

Dear Representative Liccardo, I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent arrest and potential deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful U.S. resident and former Columbia University student, who has not been charged with any crime. As a green card holder, Mr. Khalil’s rights—including his right to free speech—should be fully protected under the U.S. Constitution. I was disappointed to learn that only 14 Democratic lawmakers have signed a letter condemning this action, and I urge you to add your name in defense of due process and First Amendment protections. The use of immigration enforcement as a tool to suppress political speech sets a dangerous precedent, and I believe it is critical that elected officials stand against such overreach, regardless of where they fall on the broader geopolitical debate. Please consider taking a stand for constitutional rights and equal protection under the law. I appreciate your time and look forward to your response. Best regards, [My real name]

Please join with me in urging your rep in congress to speak up on this issue!
