The federal government will shut down after Friday if Congress fails to pass a spending bill. Republicans have described the legislation as a “clean” resolution with no partisan measures. However, according to an article in CNN, the bill does contain two poison pills...
The lack of these directives would make it harder to challenge the Trump administration’s actions in court
The bill also includes a provision that effectively neuters lawmakers’ powers to force a vote on whether to terminate a president’s ability to impose tariffs.
Not passing this bill would mean almost a million federal workers would be furloughed, and 1.4 million would continue to be working, but without being paid. This puts the Democrats in the horrible situation of having to decide between two awful choices. The technical term for this is ‘extortion”.
My personal opinion is the Senate needs to vote against the bill until the poison pill clauses are amended. The Bill limits the ability to challenge in court the Musk cuts. Also, trade is the constitutional responsibility of Congress. We must stop yielding constitutional power to Trump. However, I’m retired and not as affected by a government shut-down as a lot of other people. I’ve included a survey question on what DK readers believe should be done.
