“Dad? What did you do during the resistance?”
“Son, your Mom and I did everything we could. It was hard, and often times it felt hopeless, like it was a waste of time, but we kept at it and eventually it paid off, eventually we got our country back.
“The tricky thing was that we’re law-abiding people, and we felt a strong obligation to stick by our principles and not go outside the law. We were never the types to pick up a gun and start shooting or start setting buildings on fire or any of that stuff. Other people did that, but not us.”
“But then what did you do Dad?”
“Well, like I said son, we did what we could. We formed a group with like minded friends and neighbors, and we met every week to plan out what we could do and who would do it. We made sure to call our representatives in congress every day. Senators and governors too. We sent letters and cards to them as well, politely but firmly asking them, as our representatives, to listen to our point of view and to not vote or act against our wishes.
“We took part in protests and boycotts whenever we could and we organized a fair few of them too! We posted incessantly on social media. We spoke at town halls, and churches and schools and even on street corners. We talked to everyone we could. We told them of the dangers we faced, and we asked politely for their help and support.
“We challenged the lies at every opportunity on every platform. We refused to allow the liars to get away with just making stuff up. We demanded proof to support every falsehood and highlighted their inability to provided it. Basically, you could say we made a heck of a lot of noise!
“We voted of course, and worked like demons on get out the vote efforts in very single election, even the ones where it seemed a waste of time.
“We made sure that every elected and non-elected official from here to Washington knew what we wanted and what we expected of them. We gave money and time to those politicos that we felt were on our side, and we actively sort to primary those that were ineffective. A few or us ran for office – even small town elected officials have a louder voice than the average man or woman and that’s what we wanted – the loudest voices possible.
“The lawyers in our group played a big part too. They scrutinized everything our opponents did with eagle eyes and the moment they saw an opportunity they swung into action, filing lawsuits in every court at every level and making constant FOIA requests so as to have copies of official documentation.
“A few of us worked for the state or federal government, and did what they could to pour sand into the machinery whenever they thought it could help, or to blow the whistle by informing the press or general public about what they saw. It cost a few of them dearly, but they did it because they knew they had too. Our country and lifestyle were at stake, and we were willing to do whatever it took to save them.
“It doesn’t sound much when you lay it out like that. But I tell you it was unrelenting effort by millions of us that did it. We realized that it really was an existential crisis and that only a 100% effort would resolve it.
“So I guess that’s it. That’s what I did – I gave it 100%. Everything I had. And I’ll tell you kiddo, if I had to do it again I would.”
