Is there a metallurgist who can clarify some things about aluminum/steel? [1]

I would like to be well-informed when discussing the impact of tariffs. While information is certainly out there, many do not have the time or technical background to understand it. It was easy to find the numbers that the US imports about a quarter of its steel and about half of its aluminum. I also see that the US produces some bauxite (the ore for aluminum), but that the production is used for other things such as abrasives. It appears that the US is a net exporter of iron. Are there issues with the types of ores or with refining processes that prevent the US from producing all of its own steel? Can we get some more information on why domestic bauxite is not used in production of domestic aluminum? Could one of our readers with knowledge of the filed consider posting a primer on the subject?
