The Price of a Soul: Atheists Aligning with the GOP

It seems that some so-called "prominent" atheists have decided to throw in their lot with the Republican Party. If that’s the path they want to take, so be it—it’s their soul to sell. But I hope they got a good price because the GOP has never been known for its kindness toward atheists.

For decades, the Republican Party has positioned itself as the champion of religious conservatism. It has pushed policies that favor Christian nationalism, sought to undermine the separation of church and state, and treated atheism as a threat rather than a legitimate worldview. Now, some atheists are cozying up to this very party—perhaps under the illusion that they can wield influence, or maybe out of sheer opportunism. But what they fail to see is that they are being used.

The GOP does not embrace atheists. It tolerates them only as long as they serve a political purpose. And what purpose might that be? Attacking progressives, rejecting social justice movements, or waging war against so-called "woke" culture. But the moment these atheists step out of line—perhaps by reaffirming their commitment to science, reason, or secular governance—they will be cast aside.

What makes this even more ironic is that atheists, by and large, are staunch defenders of science and evidence-based reasoning. Yet now, some have aligned themselves with a party that has repeatedly dismissed climate science, attacked evolutionary biology, and embraced conspiracy theories over facts. Are these "prominent" atheists ready to go to war against science itself? If so, they may soon find themselves abandoned by their own community, no longer "prominent" at all.

In the end, the GOP is not changing for these atheists. It is not suddenly becoming a bastion of secular values or rational thought. Instead, it is these atheists who are changing—compromising their values for political convenience. And when the dust settles, they may find that in selling their souls to the highest bidder, they have been left with nothing at all.
