Yesterday I was invited to a sound bath. A sound bath is just as simple as it sounds. Participants enjoy the experience of hearing tones generated by instruments. For example the singing bowl to the right.

The bath was after the regularly scheduled Sunday Northbrae Community Church Worship Service. The service topic was on the healing power of music. The Sermon was delivered by Rev. Christy Ramage was was titled Exploring Sacred Sound. Here is a link to the video of the Northbrae 3/9/2025 service on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSYgSbNEWmU.

About 15 of us, that attended the previous service, joined together to listen and feel a performance of sounds. all of us had been prepared for this by attending a church service on the topic of Exploring Sacred Sound. Jump the fold and a bit more on music therapy.

Rev. Christy in her sermon shared the rich history of music as a healing tool. She highlighted the story of David & Saul from the Hebrew bible.

The verses told the story of King Saul who had become tormented by a feeling of melancholy. Saul’s servants suggested that they find a musician who could play for him to soothe his psyche. One of the servants suggested a young man named David who he heard was a skilled musician. Saul was in agreement and so the servants went to find the young David and brought him to King Saul. It then says the following: “And it happened that whenever the spirit of melancholy from God was upon Saul, David would take the lyre (harp) and play it. Saul would then feel relieved and the spirit of melancholy would depart from him” (I Samuel, 16:23). From Psychology Today: The World’s First Music Therapist

A Tibetan Singing Bowl

Standing Bell or Singing Bowls

A standing bell or resting bell is an inverted bell, supported from below with the rim uppermost. Such bells are normally bowl-shaped, and exist in a wide range of sizes, from a few centimeters to a meter in diameter. They are often played by striking, but some—known as singing bowls—may also be played by rotating a suede covered mallet around the outside rim to produce a sustained musical note. Struck bowls are used in some Buddhist religious practices to accompany periods of meditation and chanting. Struck and singing bowls are widely used for music making, meditation and relaxation, as well for personal spirituality. They have become popular with music therapists, sound healers and yoga practitioners. From Wikipedia: Standing bell

Northbrae Community Church chapel stage.

We assembled on the stage of the Northbrae chapel in a lose circle facing where the two Sound Healers from the Mind Body Sound Collective did an introduction sound healing. After a short presentation about the history, instruments, and what to do we all were asked to listen.

I closed my eyes and began to listen. At first I found myself thinking about my “to do” list. And after a few minutes let that go. Then surprisingly after about 10 minutes a name jumped into my mind. It was the name of someone I bumped into the day before who’s name I forgot. All day yesterday and the morning of the service I had been trying to remember the name.

The name just popped into my mind. It felt good remembering the name as I was stressing about not remembering it. From that point all I remember is nothing. About another 10 minutes. I just was present. No thoughts about my “to do” list or thoughts about my problems. I just was present, comfortable and calm.
