Gay Valimont, a mother, activist, and community organizer, is running in Florida's 1st Congressional District for the 2025 Special Election to fill Former Congressman Matt Gaetz’s seat. With her experience in advocacy, she is running on a platform that prioritizes community safety by reducing gun violence, addressing the opioid epidemic, and securing funding for law enforcement and community safety programs to prevent crime.
1. Reducing Gun Violence - Responsible Gun Ownership and Common Sense Laws
As a new mother in 2012, Valimont was horrified by the atrocities of the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting and was moved to get involved. Since joining Mothers Demand Action For Gunsense in America, she has been able to expand the Floridian Chapter by over 400% and effectively push for legislative change.
According to Everytown for Gun Safety, on the average year, 2,989 people die, and 5,267 are wounded by guns in Florida. Ranking at the 20th-highest for gun violence in the US, guns are the 2nd-leading cause of death among children and teens in Florida. And while these numbers are horrific, they are also preventable. Valimont’s platform promotes responsible gun ownership and aims to develop policies that keep guns out of dangerous hands, including universal background checks and federal red flag laws.
2. Fighting the Opioid Crisis
Florida has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic, and Gay Valimont is determined to tackle this crisis head-on. As Florida leads the nation in opioid-related deaths, it is clear that urgent action is needed. Valimont is committed to securing federal funding for prevention, treatment, and mental health services that will provide the necessary support to individuals and families impacted by the opioid crisis.
Her plan includes expanding access to addiction treatment services, including medication-assisted treatment and rehabilitation programs. She also advocates for increasing funding for mental health programs, recognizing that addressing the root causes of addiction is crucial for long-term recovery. Through a comprehensive, compassionate approach, Valimont aims to reduce opioid deaths and help rebuild the lives of those affected by the epidemic.
3. A Safer Florida for All
With these three key areas as the foundation of her platform, Gay Valimont is committed to making Florida a safer, more supportive state for all residents. By investing in both law enforcement and community-based programs, ensuring responsible gun ownership, and addressing the opioid crisis with targeted funding and resources, Valimont will work tirelessly to protect the health and safety of Floridians.
It is time for leadership that prioritizes public safety, values community-based solutions, and supports policies that protect all citizens. Gay Valimont is the candidate who will make this vision a reality.
We need Gay Valimont in Congress to stop the executive overreach of the Trump administration. Support her campaign for special election on April 1 here.
