The area along the East Fork of the Lewis River in the state of Washington which would become the town of La Center was originally inhabited by Cowlitz Indians. American settlement in the area began in the 1850s and by the 1870s the community known as Podunk was thriving as paddle-wheel steamers connected the community to Portland, Oregon. In 1874, the town changed its name from Podunk to Timmen’s Landing. In 1909, when the town was incorporated, the name had been changed to La Center. This is some confusion about exactly when and why this change was made.
With the development of railroads and highways, La Center lost importance and by 1940 the population had dwindled to 193. Today, about 3,800 people live in La Center.
Local history is the focus of the La Center Historical Museum. Shown below is an overview of some of the museum’s exhibits.
The museum is in a small house.
