WAYWO: Tooled Leather Belt Pouch [1]

Welcome to What Are You Working On? where we talk about (and often display) our handiwork, whether yarn and fabric crafts, woodwork, metalwork, art, or anything else “crafty” (leatherwork in this case).

While I had a very nice belt pouch for my Medieval/Renaissance costumes (that was a prize for a tourney I won), it was from before the days of smartphones, so I needed to make a larger one.

Old Pouch and New Pieces

I wanted to have a dragon passant (like the Welsh Dragon, though not red) on it, so I found images and then simplified them to something I could tool.

I traced the image onto leather tracing film, and then thoroughly wet the leather and traced it through the film into the leather.

Then, keeping the leather wet, I scored and carefully tooled the dragon into it.

Then I dyed the leather black and painted the dragon gold with some highlights.

Next was beginning construction of the pouch. I used my stitch chisel to punch the holes in the leather (though I had to use my leather punch for ones around the bottom curves of the sides).

Then I began stitching, using the two needle method, going back and forth through each hole.

After getting the back edges of both sides done, I had to alternate a few stitches on each side as I went around the bottom and completed it, due to the tight working space.

When the stitching was completed, the sides looked like this:

Then I had to rivet on the belt loops.

I was unsure exactly what sort of closure to use/make; I was thinking of using the tip of the antler piece I used for the sword hilt I made recently, but decided that it was too big and might distract from the dragon. Then, going through my lovely wife's tin of buttons, I found the perfect one for the project.

I used that, and this is the result, @7" tall x 6" wide x 2" deep. Hope you liked it!
