THIS video got my interest. It took me back to 1988.
First a little history: In 1986 I noticed Taiwan was beginning to make the first IBM PC-compatible components. I decided to start an import and assembly company. Two years later I introduced the Mini-Tower computer case to the UK market and our sales took off. I went to Taiwan to visit my suppliers and one of the questions I asked was directed at our case supplier. That question was:
“How do you keep coming up with these new designs so quickly?”
They explained that fashion changes quickly, and so it’s necessary to get a new design on the market every few months. This means a new mould has to be made for the injection moulding machine that makes the plastic parts. He went on to say that in the West, moulds took months and months to design because they were made to last for millions of cycles. And that this was stupid, because fashion changes fast, the mould would be mainly wasted. And such moulds cost a LOT.
In contrast the Chinese IMM uses less robust parts, that can be designed and machined far faster. They don’t last as long but they are MUCH cheaper and MUCH quicker to make. Which is why a Taiwan computer case cost me such a reasonable price.
Now let’s go back to the video. (I hope you watched the part about the US manufacturer.) He explained perfectly how he’s strong in design capability but makes his product in China. He did try to make it in the USA. He explains how he reached out to no less than SIX plastic injection companies in the USA and NONE of them was interested. His product? A spork. A freaking spork.
No, dream on, Trump. Manufacturing, once gone, is gone forever. The people of England could tell you that. England had its own destroyer, named Margaret Thatcher. After her, industry was over.
