Protests pro or con? Let’s get non-binary here!
The simple act of getting together to organize is revolutionary, don’t forget it! That’s why repressive governments prevent this.
“We the people” together may have less $ than 4 billionaire oligarchs, but are STRONGER than them when we unite.
Our online culture separates us
We know that our political enemies, Russia, right wing rich conservatives want to divide and conquer us.
Humans are social biologically — we have mirror neurons that light up when we see others doing the same thing. It boosts our happy hormones.
So let’s not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Let’s take the energy around protests and protect it, harness it, amplify it, organize it, feed it! Not JUST protests, but making your local protest into part of a larger organizing movement.
How to: Get political in your neighborhood, and make personal connections at protests.
I went to a workshop this weekend. We had 75 people attend of about 140 signups— the core group MET AT a PROTEST and decided to have an organizing meeting, then shared the info with their friends and networks via email and text. They also shared it on indivisible.org’s app, and with new local activism calendars which have sprung up locally. We also passed out flyers with the event info at another recent protest.
We divided into groups and shared strategies hopes, interests and recent successes, and made action plans.
We shared contact info and most of us commited to select at least one future organizing task to do. We connected people with communication networks which are springing up on topics
We had attendees ranging in age from 15 to elderly
We made plans for things like: media actions, how to extend the reach and message of the next protests. How to support each other — How to oust our republican congressman who barely won.
Many people came away energized, more hopeful, more “connected.”
I was impressed by one attendee who shared how after the election she just started knocking on her neighbor’s doors — the ones who had dem signs up, and held a house meeting.
She has never been an activist before — They now have a neighborhood support group with over 20 people in it, and keep in touch with each other in doing actions, and keeping spirits up and meet in each others houses.
This is how its done. one person at a time, one action at a time, one group at a time.
Be smart, take care of each other, stay joyous with a heart full of love and never give up — keep building for the next thing. At each event, think about what comes next.
We also had someone there who works globally with people in Syria and other countreis living under repressive governments.
Here is my take from her. Don’t give up your right to assemble and speak out in advance!
Exercising your constitutional right in the face of an authoritarian who would take it away is itself radical.
