Living High
While watching the original Iron Chef on PBS we would sometimes see scenes from the Pan Pacific hotel in San Francisco, so one day we decided to check it out. At the front desk, while we were waiting, a guy came up to us and asked if we’d like to eat downstairs instead of the restaurant. We said sure, and he led us down to an amazing sight, a room full of well-dressed folks sitting at elegant tables. There were two empty seats, probably a no-show, which we took. This was our introduction to the annual Narsai David Holiday Dinner.
In subsequent years we attended this dinner, until the series ended. After the initial year we stayed the night at whatever hotel the dinner was held at. The food and wine was always so spectacular and elegant, quite out of the usual for us simple county folks from rural Sonoma County.
Once, at the Ritz-Carlton, we checked in and I mischievously asked the gal for a “better” room for us, since we had just come from the farm to the big city. I should mention that the rooms were included as part of the Holiday Dinner package. Just as mischievously she smiled and handed us our keys. OMG, our room was a suite with two bedrooms, marble floors, and views of both the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge! It was our first and only opportunity to see and experience how the 1% live. And that wasn’t even the penthouse.
We certainly live well enough, go to regular restaurants, and stay in average motels. But this was a cut above. We should all feel sorry for the wealthy, because for them, it’s all average.
Have any of you stayed in a 5 star hotel or resort? Worth it? Memorable? Routine? Sought after? Best ever?
