Trump’s efforts to leave Zelenskyy out in the cold have backfired spectacularly.

x Ironically, Trump's attempt to humiliate Zelensky may have woken a sleeping giant in Europe. The unity and love that they are showing are undeniable. 🇺🇦

Trump told Europe that they can no longer rely on us. They prepare to stand without us. Will the US be safer without friends?

Trouble in MAGA paradise: New York Times (paywall) reports on the opposition between Elon Musk, pushing for ultra-wealthy interests, and Steve Bannon, right wing populist, highlighting the chasm between Republican donors and Republican voters. They agree on one thing, unfortunately: racism.

Mr. Bannon, who has characterized Mr. Musk as an interloper, a “parasitic illegal immigrant” and a “truly evil person,” suggested the world’s richest man was weighing Mr. Trump down. Mr. Musk has been privately irritated by Mr. Bannon’s attacks at times, according to people in touch with him. But he has only rarely engaged with Mr. Bannon. “Bannon is a great talker, but not a great doer,” Mr. Musk posted on X, his social media platform, last month. “What did he get done this week? Nothing.” Mr. Trump’s effort to mediate between the two men, which has not been previously reported, reflects the president’s awareness that Mr. Bannon has a powerful megaphone with key parts of the MAGA base. Mr. Bannon’s vision for the movement also has its fair share of critics for its alignment with right-wing nationalism, which he has labeled a “badge of honor.” “Let them call you racists,” Mr. Bannon told a far-right gathering in France in 2018.(NYT)

More trouble in MAGA pradise: Is FOX no longer Trump’s best friend?

Donald Trump's latest honeymoon with Fox News may be coming to an end as the struggling economy is taking another hit due to his on-again, off-again tariff threats that have businesses paralyzed and investors watching their portfolios taking daily dives. According to New Republic analyst Greg Sargent, there were warning signs for the president this week as various Fox News hosts openly expressed a dour view about the direction of the country during Trump's second term. As Sargent noted, the network has always been overly pro-business and Trump's antics have put the network's featured personalities in an awkward spot as the economy tanks. (Raw Story, bold mine)

It’s not about saving money. So do tell us, Elon, Donald: just what are you about?

x “By firing us, you’re going to cut down on how much revenue the country brings in,” said an axed IRS specialist who’d been brought in to audit complex tax returns filed by large corporations and wealthy individuals. “This was not about saving money.” By @andykroll.bsky.social

Are you and your family safe from measles? Check the CDC guidelines while they’re still out there.

x 🚨Measles cases in the US surge 35% in ONE WEEK—now at 222 in 12 states. We’re nearing last year’s TOTAL of 285, and it’s only March. Two deaths already, both unvaccinated. Texas is the epicenter with 198 cases. The CDC’s weekly data lags, so the numbers are likely even higher. — MeidasTouch (@meidastouch.com) March 8, 2025 at 2:24 PM

How congress members would look in milk cartons.

x It would be a real shame if y'all shared this online, printed out a few and hung up all around the Eastern Shore of Maryland. 😉

Sunday Science

Geologists have discovered the oldest crater on earth which may indicate the first of Earth’s continents.

The oldest rocks on Earth formed more than 3 billion years ago, and are found in the cores of most modern continents. However, geologists still cannot agree how or why they formed... Many geologists think these ancient rocks formed above hot plumes that rose from above Earth’s molten metallic core, rather like wax in a lava lamp. Others maintain they formed by plate tectonic processes similar to modern Earth, where rocks collide and push each other over and under... A few years ago, we published a paper suggesting that the energy required to make continents in the Pilbara came from outside Earth, in the form of one or more collisions with meteorites many kilometres in diameter. As the impacts blasted up enormous volumes of material and melted the rocks around them, the mantle below produced thick “blobs” of volcanic material that evolved into continental crust. How come an ant line doesn’t have traffic jams? They don’t tailgate.

They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of three to 20 that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another—and they don’t speed up to pass others. (Scientific American)

Did you spring ahead? Science shows Daylight Savings Time does not actually save daylight (duh) and that Standard Time year around is a better idea.

However, the name is misleading because it doesn’t “protect” sunshine but rather eliminates critical morning light, which is essential for regulating circadian rhythms. Major health organizations, along with the National Safety Council, strongly oppose permanent DST due to its well-documented risks. There are signs that suggest the U.S. is finally waking up to these problems. Out of 13,000 school districts, 1,000 have independently adopted later school start times. California and Florida have enacted laws requiring high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. California’s mandate went into effect in 2022, and Florida’s is set to begin in 2026. Permanent standard time and later school start times are not radical ideas. They’re practical, evidence-based solutions based on human biology. Implementing these changes nationally would require congressional action. (Scientific American)
