There are reports The White House is considering a 50% cut to NASA’s science programs, and 25% of its overall budget. This would be catastrophic for both current and planned missions. On Friday, space reporter Eric Berger at Ars Technica published a story that the new Administration is planning a 25% cut in NASA’s overall budget including a whopping 50% to the Science Mission Directorate (SMD). SMD is the home to many flagship programs that we are all very familiar with like the Mars Rovers, the New Horizon’s mission to Pluto, and the recently launched Europa Clipper mission to look for evidence of life in our solar system.
But, there is still time for the administration to reconsider. In response to these potential cuts, The Planetary Society has issued a statement and launched a campaign to urge citizens to write their representatives and voice their concern. Those who wish to take action can do so at planet.ly/nasacuts. As of midday Saturday, more than 7,000 people had taken action to send letters to their members of Congress and the Administration. To be effective in convincing the Administration to change course, we need everyone who supports NASA and its space science and exploration programs to add their voice to this growing number.
If you oppose such massive cuts to a program that has been at the core of scientific discovery and innovation that has benefitted all of us in myriad ways in our daily lives, join the Society and its dedicated members and take action today! We can do this, but only if we all act together. Ad astra!
