Standing up to a fascist - civil courage [1]

So, I was walking home tonight from my favourite cafe where I write.
As I walking by the Nordsee (a German fast-food joint specialising in seafood) the was a group of teens and one of them was being harassed by a guy who was trying to be an extra in the series Vikings: a shaved head and elongated beard.
I went to the youth and said “Hey how’s it going?’ While I shook his hand. He was stunned and didn’t know what to do. I turned to the fascist who was about to get violent, and said “it’s ok, this is one of my students” while I put my body in-between them.
He wasn’t having any of it, he replied “na und?” — “and so”
The guy pushed me in the chest — I pushed him back.
His eyes grew wide — keep in mind that he was a good 12” taller than me, I’m 5’6”
~But I’m also a combat veteran and I’ve faced worse. And it is proof that bullies have no idea what to do when someone stands up to them.
There was a bit of back and forth and the Polizei van arrived. With the polizei there he said to me “do you know what football hooligans are?”
And I replied (please see my image above) “ do you know what American Green Berets are?
- obviously, as I am 58 I would not stand a chance against someone 28.
And I must admit, that I was shaking and that I was in a mode that I thought that I had long forgotten: that I needed to eliminate the threat, that I needed to kill. And that is what disturbed me the most.
I told the Polizistin this and what moved me tonight was her reply. She was about 22 or 24 but said “I know exactly what you are feeling, you did the right thing.”
I said “Of course, you’re a Polizistin, you know what I’m talking about.” and she sent me home.
So here I sit, the feelings and adrenaline subsiding. But still disturbed: too bad there isn’t anyone at the VA hotline anymore.
But at least that kid is safe!
