Rich Tax Beaks, Broken Nursing Homes [1]

The Center for Medicare Advocacy has reported the Republicans Budget Resolution that passed the house on 2-25-25 requires $880 billion in cuts in Medicaid over a 10 year period in order to make tax cuts enacted in 2017 permanent and to pay for border security. The Budget gives an annual tax cut averaging $62,000 for those who make $743,000 or more. The tax cut for the wealthy is greater than the annual family incomes for most of the 72 million who have health coverage through Medicaid. There is a cumulative target of $1.5 trillion cut from Medicaid through 2034. Although Trump promised that the average worker would benefit from the corporate and wealthy tax cuts actually Trump’s tax cuts were a trickle down failure.
The primary payer for nursing home care is Medicaid. Medicaid also helped 10 million people pay their Medicare premiums. The average annual costs of a nursing home bed in 2023 were $104,025 to $116,800. Medicaid cuts will devastate nursing home residents. Without the payments from Medicaid coming in many nursing homes will close.
Trump wants to shift the costs lost from Medicaid to the state, local and tribal governments. These entities would have to massively raise their own taxes to begin to meet the need from the loss of Federal money. Medicaid cuts could most significantly affect the poorest states.
Cuts to Medicaid are a matter of life and death for nursing home residents. The Senate has a different version of the Budget Resolution that they are now working on coming to an agreement on. If these cuts will affect you or your family or friends you should inundate the Senate with letters and calls to stop this horrific tragedy facing so many Americans
