Montana. This was given to us by Bilbo in the GNR comments yesterday morning.
Drag ban and a “child welfare” bill that would’ve taken away trans children from their parents shot down in Montana.
x Rep. Zooey Zephyr - My Wife - just gave an incredible speech against a drag ban in Montana. It was so strong that a Republican rose to speak passionately against the bill, chastising the sponsor. The drag ban dies in Montana, flips 10+ Republican votes! This is the power of representation.

x And it happens again! SEVERAL Republicans cross the aisle, vote against a bill that would remove trans kids from their parents. They do so even after another Republican threatens them with primaries. 29 Republicans flip this time!

California (you can’t spell ‘Schadenfreude’ without ‘Shade’).
A California union boss thought his $300K salary would count toward his pension. Here’s why it won’t via CalMatters
Gerry Serrano wanted to keep it all. The former Santa Ana cop pulled in almost $300,000 annually while leading the city’s police officer union, a sum based on what he earned in the preceding years as a longtime police detective. For the past five years, he has fought in court and at the state’s pension board to have all of that compensation count toward his retirement income, including pay that originated from perks for specific law enforcement assignments that he didn’t actually perform while he was a union leader. Last week, he lost. ✂️

Arizona
‘Donald J. Trump Highway’ proposal fails in Arizona Senate by a single vote via Arizona Mirror
MAGA loyalists across the country are eager to pay fealty to President Donald Trump by attempting to put his name or likeness on U.S. currency, airports, roads and even Mt. Rushmore. The Trump administration has made it clear that the president, who has a habit of plastering his name in huge letters across his real estate, values loyalty over all else. But on Thursday, Arizona’s Senate Republicans couldn’t find the votes they needed to recommend that State Route 260, which runs through rural areas between Cottonwood and Show Low, be renamed “Donald J. Trump Highway.” Senate Concurrent Memorial 1001, sponsored by MAGA die-hard Sen. Wendy Rogers, of Flagstaff, would have urged the State Board on Geographic and Historic Names to rename the highway that runs through Rogers’ district after Trump. But one Senate Republican, Frank Carroll, of Sun City West, voted against the proposal, resulting in its failure on a 15-9 vote. Republican Sen. Shawnna Bolick was absent from the vote. But because memorials don’t have the power of law, even if Carroll or Bolick had voted for the proposal, the renaming would remain merely a suggestion. ✂️

Washington (state)
Trump flouted judge’s order by canceling Seattle Children’s grant, Washington AG says via Washington State Standard
Washington’s attorney general asked a federal judge Thursday to hold the Trump administration in contempt for allegedly canceling a grant to Seattle Children’s Hospital to research innovative gender-affirming care interventions. In the motion filed in U.S. District Court in Seattle, the state says the National Institutes of Health revoked the grant despite a court order, sending a letter to researchers that said “this award no longer effectuates agency priorities.” “Research programs based on gender identity are often unscientific, have little identifiable return on investment, and do nothing to enhance the health of many Americans,” the letter written by an NIH official adds. “Many such studies ignore, rather than seriously examine, biological realities. It is the policy of NIH not to prioritize these research programs.” A second letter on Tuesday said the agency was stripping Seattle Children’s of more than $200,000, potentially forcing the hospital to pay back grant money already spent. At the time of the Feb. 28 revocation, a temporary restraining order blocked the implementation of President Donald Trump’s executive order looking to halt federal funding for institutions that provide gender-affirming care for transgender youth. The restraining order came in response to a lawsuit filed by Washington and other states, along with physicians. ✂️

Oregon
Greater Idaho movement wants a seat at the table via Oregon Capital Chronicle (they’re interesting — they cover a lot of Idaho matters)
Some residents in eastern Oregon would like to merge with our neighbor to the east, creating a Greater Idaho. Supporters include some state lawmakers. This session, again, Republican legislators have proposed looking at the issue in Senate Memorial 7 and also House Bill 3488, which would set up a task force. The possibility of those being passed is remote in a Legislature controlled by Democrats but that is less important than understanding the reasons behind the campaign. The movement appears to be a symptom of the divide within our country — not the cause, but a result of people feeling isolated and with polarized views from their neighbors, even if the neighbor happens to be their state. Those living west of the proposed line may be inclined to ignore the concerns or the purpose of the plan. There may be a tendency to ridicule the proposal as a joke, but the concerns are not a joke. Supporters have noted a variety of issues including water rights, agricultural regulations, rural broadband, spikes in unsheltered homelessness, public land use, solar priorities, protocols for ranchers, undue burden of estate taxes, media, housing, health care deserts and more. The League of Women Voters has positions on most of these issues, but more importantly, we strive to ensure all voters are represented whether east, west, north or south. ✂️
Note that I am not advocating either side. I’m sure (not having researched it at all) that the real economic engine in Oregon is Portland. West Idaho would just move the region to being the Alabama of the north. OTOH, the remaining part of Oregon would save a LOT of money — again having not researched at all. I guess in the end, my own preference would be for the status quo, but I don’t live there.

That gets us the west coast plus Arizona and some really cool news from Montana again. I’ll stop for now and pick up Hawaii and Alaska next time. I’m starting out in the west because my dad didn’t like cities. Our vacations would be in a station wagon heading west. I’m more familiar with the west, so as I ease into doing this, it’s easiest for me to start there.

x DOGE cut off payments for the electricity, cell phone, and internet service of U.S. government employees who work in a high-risk area in Central America. Meanwhile, DOGE apparently plans to spend $25,000 to install a washer and dryer for their own personal use in a federal office building in DC.

This is my first foray into BlueSky in a manner closer to what’s intended. I could get lost there. After all this time I’m beginning to understand what the attraction of Twitter was. I think I’m going to stop here. I may revisit it after a break, but then I’ll have to cull, and I’d rather not.

Today Is…
International Women’s Day ! I confess: I really like women.
International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the historical, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also observed in support of taking action against gender inequality around the world. We all know the world couldn’t run without women (we mean, just listen to Beyoncé). This is the day to appreciate their efforts! Organizations large and small come together to show women just how valuable they are in today’s society. Also make sure to help women around you find resources on scholarships available for women from around the world to help them spread their wings and fly higher.

National Proofreading Day . I think nation is trying to send me a message…
National Proofreading Day, celebrated each year on March 8, is a day to promote error-free writing. We all make typos, grammar mistakes, and spelling errors when we write, especially if we are moving too fast! National Proofreading Day is an opportunity to slow down, proofread our work, and then proof it again. And if you’re lucky enough to work with an editor who proofs your work for you, National Proofreading Day is a great opportunity to thank them for always ensuring that your writing is free of mistakes.

Be Nasty Day . I can’t wait to look into this one…
History of Be Nasty Day Be Nasty Day is one of the lesser-known holidays. A day set aside to be nasty, this is meant to be a lighthearted way to observe the darker side of human nature. Being nice all the time is great, but occasionally it can get a bit boring. At times we have to be nasty, so we can maintain our boundaries with people, no matter where or who they are. From family, friends, and even workplaces, sometimes people don’t get the hint. Moreover, being nice seems to encourage people to argue, even if you’re saying no to something. A lot of people think that saying no politely is an invitation for them to convince you otherwise. In these cases, it’s not only important but necessary to be nasty so that you won’t be harassed. The word ‘nasty’ has also taken a completely different connotation since Hillary Clinton was called that by her political opponent. Ever since, the word has become a feminist rallying cry, with women all over the world encouraged to be nasty to hold on to their rights and fight for what they believe in. The Nasty Woman has become part of memes, art and performing arts, books and magazines, and other popular culture. The Nasty woman Project took off, becoming an important part of the feminist movement, and working towards achieving gender equality. As the movement states, sometimes being nasty is what it takes to do what you need to do, and stand up for what you believe in, because there’s no other way to make people listen.
The shades are open!
