Statehood for Puerto Rico

The current administration’s fascination with making Greenland or Canada part of the USA is easy to laugh off as ridiculous (do you know how hard it is to piss off Canadians?), but it is instructive to consider why Trump clings to these seemingly outlandish plans. Part of the answer is likely that he wants to write his name into the history books as having expanded America. Rather than passively wait to try and mitigate the fallout of whatever batshit crazy pretext the administration makes for a land grab, Democrats should go on offense and start pushing to have Puerto Rico recognized as the 51st state. This would make Donald Trump the first president since Eisenhower in 1959 to preside over a formal addition to the territory of the USA. The fact that Puerto Rico tends to vote more left-leaning than the continental US would add two more democratic members of the senate and at least one to the house, helping shifting the balance of power back away from crazy.

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territorial possession of the United States acquired in 1898 following the Spanish–American War, making it "the oldest colony in the modern world.” Puerto Rico’s current population is 3.2 million, which is higher than 19 current U.S. states. Its inhabitants are citizens of the United States (since 1917), but they have no representation in Congress and cannot participate in presidential elections.
