At Least One House Republican, Backed by Poll Results, Takes Issue with Trump's Rhetoric on Ukraine [1]

Interesting story in Mediaite about Don Bacon (R-NE), who shared a recent poll from Reuters just prior to Trump’s pseudo-SOTU campaign speech that called out the Liar-in-Chief on some of his more outrageous points dealing with Russia’s war on Ukraine:

Bacon, a retired brigadier general in the Air Force, shared the poll with the caption, “Overwhelmingly, Americans know who is at fault. Moral clarity is important.”

So despite Mango Mussolini’s absurd assertion that Ukraine was somehow responsible for being attacked by Russia, even those Americans who identify as Republicans disagreed by a nearly 6:1 margin (62% — 11%), though a disturbingly high 28% weren’t really quite sure. Democrats of course were even more clear-eyed when it comes to moral clarity on that point, with just 2% agreeing that Ukraine actually bore more responsibility for the war than Russia.

OTOH, when it comes to the “minerals deal” Trump was trying to coerce Zelensky into signing at the infamous Oval Office meltdown last week, the partisan divide was all too evident. By a 3:1 margin (73% — 24%) Republicans were perfectly happy to try an extort a share of Ukraine’s future mineral wealth for past aid rendered (and that has now been “paused” by Putin’s puppet), whereas Democrats by an even larger, nearly 4:1 margin (75%— 21%) didn’t really think that was any way to treat an ally in desperate need of assistance.

Bacon followed the poll by also highlighting some of the atrocities committed by Russia in Ukraine. “War criminal Putin launched a ballistic missile at a hotel where American, UK, and local Ukrainian aid and health volunteers were staying. 4 dead, over 30 injured. In his deliberate bombing of children’s cancer hospitals, maternity wards, shopping centers, and places labeled as sheltering women and children, Putin further confirms his cowardice and contempt for life, including the lives of Russians he sends to die in his pointless war,” Bacon wrote. On Friday morning he added, “Russia tried to assassinate the Ukrainian President in 2004 using poison. He survived but was scarred. The war in Ukraine didn’t start in 2022.” … Other Republican members of Congress have also sought to make clear they view Russia as both the aggressor in Ukraine and geopolitical foe, despite Trump’s friendly overtures to Putin. Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) wrote on X this week: Russia arms Hezbollah Russia arms the Houthis Russia arms Hamas Wilson also praised Trump for revealing he was “strongly considering” new sanctions against Russia following the recent missile attack on Ukraine. “Grateful that President Trump has threatened MAXIMUM PRESSURE sanctions on Russia in response to the horrific attacks of War Criminal Putin. Can’t come soon enough!! Maximum leverage needed for successful deal,” added Wilson.

At least Joe Wilson seems to know how to frame the argument for Trump, though fat chance Comrade Krasnov is the least bit serious about applying any real pressure on his thoroughly malevolent handler. The real question is why there aren’t more Republicans like Don Bacon and Joe Wilson willing to confront Trump on his craven kowtowing to the war criminal in the Kremlin.
