There’s a set of starling stories coming out today. First, on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Last week, Trump, Vance attack on Zelenskyy angers many. But Russians and (some) Republicans love it. On top of that, US paused Ukraine intelligence support: Trump officials, and if that weren’t enough, Trump ORDERS UK Not to Share Intel with Ukraine. So Putin is thrilled with his puppet, right? Not so fast: Trump ‘Strongly Considering’ New Sanctions on Russia to Force Cease-Fire Deal.
Then there’s the Middle East. A month ago, Trump says US will 'take over' Gaza: 'We'll own it'. And the other day, Trump warns Gaza 'you are dead' if hostages not freed. Now, In 1st, US holding secret direct talks with Hamas to free American hostages, end war. Even though Israel outraged over direct Trump-Hamas talks.
Elsewhere in the Middle East, Trump says he sent a letter to Iran urging negotiations on nuclear weapons:
President Donald Trump said he sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei about negotiating a nuclear deal, while also threatening military action if an agreement isn't reached. . . . The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, however, said they have not received a letter from Trump.
OK, what’s going on here? It wasn’t enough for Trump to send the stock markets into a tizzy, along with Canada, Mexico, and China, because they can’t tell from one minute to the next whether Trump’s tariffs are on, or off, or sort-of-on-off. And that’s on top of the domestic chaos in Washington over who’s been fired, who’s about to be fired, who’s been unfired (but just for now). Now Trump is even sending his puppet master Putin spinning around (and no doubt tangling up his puppet strings), along with the Middle East and who knows where else.
It’s well known Trump thrives on chaos; he thinks it’s good for him for some reason. In this case, though, there is a method (sort of) to this madness:
Trump wants a Nobel peace prize.
'I got elected in bigger, better, crazier election but they gave Obama the Nobel prize' That’s from the Times of India; Trump’s obsession with Obama’s Nobel is known all over the world.
Keep in mind also that Trump is purely transactional; he does what he thinks will work for him just at that moment. What came before and what will come after have little meaning for him (except when it comes to getting revenge). He put pressure on Zelenskyy to make a bad peace deal, but now Europe is coming to Ukraine’s aid. So now he thinks if he puts pressure on Russia, maybe they’ll come to the table and Zelenskyy will have to show up as well. Putin must be tearing his hair out (what he has left of it).
Hamas is probably feeling some similar emotions. Does Trump want to wipe them out, does he want to drive them out so he can build Trump Gaza, is he ok with leaving them there as long as the hostages go free? And what must Netanyahu be thinking after he asked Trump specifically not to negotiate with Hamas?
Ditto with Iran, though they have known how Trump operates for years and can play him like a rookie in the bazaar.
This thrashing about is Trump desperately looking for any conflict in the world he can appear to have put an end to, whether it works or not, whether it holds or not, whether or not he really had anything to do with it, regardless of who gets hurt or who benefits — so long as he can announce he deserves that shiny object in Oslo.
