A Nose for Trouble: Can We Beat the Real Steal? [1]

This week, in plain sight, the First Felon raved, “government databases list 4.7 million Social Security [recipients] aged 100 to 109… [and] 3.6 million from... 110 to 119.”
Wow! Cue the chainsaws!
Seriously: sounds like a deep state of delusion (or a VERY old wives’ tale). Fact is, when ANYONE impugns something so vital (and traditionally nonpartisan) as Social Security, two closely related adages can’t help but apply.
One: trust, but verify. Two: bizarre claims require ironclad proof.
So. Absent one atom of evidence, he who falls for the rich-born Trump’s rant against the source of gram’s & gramp’s livelihood needs cold showers. Smelling salts. And perhaps a bipartisan tarring & feathering.
If that sounds harsh, let’s check the rearview. Three decades ago, a churchgoing, rock-ribbed, gun-collecting, GOP elected official of my acquaintance had just begun to receive Social Security payments. To that end, for 4 decades, he’d paid taxes (whose regressiveness one of his heroes, Ronald Reagan, had seen fit to augment).
‘Needless to say,’ he was well short of his 119th birthday.
Apropos of something I don’t recall, he once memorably declared, “IF ANYONE EVER TRIES TO STEAL THE FUNDS THAT WORKERS HAVE ACCRUED IN GOOD FAITH, YOU CAN BET THERE’LL BE HELL TO PAY!”
Were he alive, you can bet he would not be amused by Trump playing fast & loose (not to say playing God) with the truth. On behalf of those who (thanks wholly or in part to the now Trump smeared safety net) remain above ground, can we afford to assume anything but the worst?
