Officials reveal shocking shift in major water source that millions of Americans depend on — here's what's happening
Lake Mead's future looks brighter, with new projections showing water levels rising nearly 14 feet above what experts predicted last year, reported 8 News Now. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's latest study reveals stable conditions through 2026 at America's largest reservoir. The lake currently sits at 1,065.07 feet above sea level, and forecasts predict it will reach 1,069.60 feet by March 2025. This improvement stems from successful partnerships between states, farmers, water agencies, and tribes working together to keep more water in the lake. "Our improved storage conditions at Lake Mead are due to conservation efforts taking place collectively between Reclamation and the basin states. Simple as that," said Lower Colorado River Basin spokesman Doug Hendrix in September 2024. He added that recent agreements with the basin states are helping preserve Lake Mead's threshold level.

SpaceX's Starship explodes in space, again raining debris over Caribbean
SpaceX's massive Starship spacecraft exploded in space on Thursday minutes after lifting off from Texas, causing the FAA to halt air traffic in parts of Florida, in the second straight failure this year for Elon Musk's Mars rocket program. Several videos on social media showed fiery debris streaking through the dusk skies near south Florida and the Bahamas after Starship broke up in space shortly after it began to spin uncontrollably with its engines cut off, a SpaceX live stream of the mission showed. The failure of the eighth Starship test comes just over a month after the seventh also ended in an explosive failure. The back-to-back mishaps occurred in early mission phases that SpaceX has easily surpassed previously, a setback for a program Musk has sought to speed up this year.

FBI offers $10M reward for Canadian ex-Olympian accused of running drug empire, ordering murders
The FBI announced Thursday that Canadian former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding has been added to the agency’s Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list. Wedding faces several U.S. charges, including conspiracy to export cocaine, running a criminal enterprise and murder. The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs announced it is offering a $10 million reward for information that could lead to the 43-year-old’s arrest, alongside the FBI’s current offering of $50,000 for more information on Wedding. Wedding’s drug trafficking network allegedly regularly shipped hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia, through Mexico and Southern California, to Canada and locations in the United States. Wedding is also accused of orchestrating multiple murders as part of these drug crimes. He is reportedly known by several aliases, including “El Jefe,” “Public Enemy” and “Giant.”
Residents face massive dilemma as city considers 'controversial' plan to abandon homes: 'There are big and challenging discussions ahead'
As sea levels continue to rise due to rising global temperatures, California residents are facing a tough decision about whether to abandon their coastal homes. As explained by the Santa Cruz Local, local governments across the California coast are required by state law to prepare for sea-level rise in the coming decades. Unfortunately, "the process has not been easy" in Santa Cruz County, where coastal residents and business owners must consider the possibility of leaving the area. A potential retreat strategy was described by the outlet as "controversial," pointing to the "wide-scale backlash against the Coastal Commission and the ouster of a city mayor" after the town of Pacifica proposed plans to draw back from the ocean gradually. It was noted that Santa Cruz "may get its first taste of managed retreat within the next five years," as there are plans to relocate a stretch of road about 50 feet inland.
Archaeologists Unearthed An Ancient Network of Canals Beneath the World’s First City
History’s first city, at least according to the ancient text known as the Sumerian King List found on a clay tablet, was also one of the most intricately planned regions in all of ancient Mesopotamia according to a new study published in the journal Antiquity, which highlighted how the entire city was watered by the Euphrates River. Study authors mapped what had been preserved of the archaeological landscape and discovered what they called a “well-developed network of artificial irrigation canals.” So well-developed, in fact, that the researchers discovered not only 200 primary and large canals all pulling from the Euphrates, but that those canals fed another 4,000 minor and branch canals. Jaafar Jotheri, lead author of the study, posted on X that all the canals were connected to the ancient Euphrates and linked more than 700 farms. The team used everything from satellite imagery, drones, geomorphological analysis, historical records, and remote sensing technology to map the area.
Hubble Telescope discovers a new '3-body problem' puzzle among Kuiper Belt asteroids
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has discovered that a system of asteroids in the distant Kuiper Belt may be triplets, not twins as previously suspected. If so, the stable trio of icy space rocks would be just the second example of three gravitationally bound space rocks found in the Kuiper Belt, the doughnut-shaped region of icy bodies that lurks out beyond the orbit of Neptune. If it is confirmed as a triplet, the system — designated 148780 Altjira — could offer scientists a chance to improve their models of how three gravitationally bound bodies move through space together. This puzzle, known as the "three-body problem," has been a challenge since Isaac Newton published his work "Principia" in 1687.
Car being pulled from Columbia River might have belonged to Oregon family that vanished in 1958
Authorities will try again Friday to pull a station wagon from the Columbia River that's believed to have belonged to an Oregon family of five who disappeared nearly 70 years ago while they were out searching for Christmas greenery. The search for the Martin family was a national news story at the time and led some to speculate about the possibility of foul play, with a $1,000 reward offered for information about their whereabouts. Salvage efforts were called off just before dark on Thursday and authorities said they could not provide a timetable for the removal of the car.
An air force bombing drill with South Korean F-16s just ended in disaster
South Korea's fighter jets accidentally bombed its own civilians during a live-fire drill on Thursday, the country's military said. At about 10 a.m. Thursday local time, two KF-16 fighters dropped eight 500-pound MK-82 bombs on the village of Pocheon, South Korea's air force said in a briefing. At least 15 people were injured, and several houses were damaged, reports from local South Korean media outlets said.
Volkswagen EV stuns with nearly 600-mile drive on single charge: 'New efficiency milestone'
Volkswagen has set a new benchmark in electric vehicle performance with its ID.7 Pro S model, which recently covered an impressive 585 miles (941 kilometers) on a single charge during a special efficiency test in Italy. That's a significant leap from its rated range of 441 miles (709 kilometers), proving how far EVs can go when designed with smart, efficient technology. And the best part? With less frequent charging, it will save on fuel costs and avoid costly maintenance, like oil changes. Plus, with no tailpipe pollution, it's a cleaner choice for the environment. For drivers tired of dealing with frequent trips to the gas station or mechanic, the ID.7 offers a more convenient and cost-effective alternative. The worst part, though? Unfortunately, the company recently announced the ID.7 would not be coming to North America as originally planned and will only be sold in Europe and China, as Car and Driver reported, though enough public interest might change the company's mind on that.
