I was a freshman in college studying TV and Cinema production when Richard Attenborough’s film “Gandhi” was released in 1982. I can still remember watching the movie from a film student’s perspective, marveling at the craftmanship of Attenborough’s direction and the sheer scale of such an epic movie. But, I also remember having a transcendental moment watching the scene of the Dharasana Salt Works at the end of Gandhi’s Salt March. All thought about the film’s craftmanship faded away and I became completely engrossed in the scene, not believing that such an event could have actually occurred. I was in awe of what Gandhi had accomplished through non-violence and passive resistance. 43 years later, I still feel that sense of awe just writing this diary about it.

Today, I was reading another diary on this site and someone suggested a march on Washington. I immediately thought of the Salt March. I have been aching to find something, anything that I can do to stop what is happening to our democracy.
We need a Salt March of our own.
The genius of that moment of resistance was that Gandhi found a symbol, the making of salt, that would resonate with all classes in society. As Gandhi said:
“Suppose, a people rise in revolt. They cannot attack the abstract constitution or lead an army against proclamations and statutes ... Civil disobedience has to be directed against the salt tax or the land tax or some other particular point – not that; that is our final end, but for the time being it is our aim, and we must shoot straight.”
I admit that I don’t know what our particular point should be. We can’t make salt. But, I think there are enough smart people in the Daily Kos community that we can find our own particular point.
Like the men in the Salt Works scene who walked (non-violently) into the violent strikes of a viciously wielded club, I am at the point were I can see myself making such a sacrifice for the greater good. I think anyone reading this will agree. I can’t just sit here and read anymore.
It’s time for action. Let’s brainstorm this out. Trump has created enough Executive Orders and awful proclamations that there must be something there for us to exploit.
If not salt, how about…
