Kitchen Table Kibitzing: Springing Forward [1]

It’s near to impossible to believe that this Sunday we switch our clocks ahead! Already? Just when my body has adjusted to falling back. Plus it feels like way too early in the year to be doing this.

Daylight savings time means we lose an hour of sleep and this disruption in our circadian rhythm can also negatively impact our health: studies have found that this hourly change causes an uptick in heart attacks and strokes. Car accidents in the morning hours also increase at this time of year.

NBC reports:

The brain has a master clock that is set by exposure to sunlight and darkness. This circadian rhythm is a roughly 24-hour cycle that determines when we become sleepy and when we’re more alert. The patterns change with age, one reason that early-to-rise youngsters evolve into hard-to-wake teens. Morning light resets the rhythm. By evening, levels of a hormone called melatonin begin to surge, triggering drowsiness. Too much light in the evening — that extra hour from daylight saving time — delays that surge and the cycle gets out of sync.

Sleep experts suggest going to bed 15-20 minutes earlier for a few nights before the time change and rising earlier in the morning. Another way to reset the body’s clock is to get some early morning sunlight during the first week of daylight savings time.

The current occupant of the Oval Office wants to end daylight savings time.

"The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn't!" he posted on his social media site Truth Social in December. "Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation." www.clarionledger.com/...

x I believe the second breakfast horde is ready for daylight savings to Spring forward. They get their treat At 11 AM, it is 10 AM right now. Somehow they know that this time next sunday, it will be treat time.

x So yeah, rest up this week people, because next week traffic accidents and heart attacks will spike, and not to save energy, or to daylight, but mostly just because this is the way it's always been, for boomers.

Protests:

From Reuters Tuesday:

March 4 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that all federal funding will stop for colleges and schools that allow "illegal" protests and that agitators will be imprisoned or sent back to the country they came from. "American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on the crime, arrested," Trump said in a Truth Social post.

and the WSJ notes that in a Truth Social post he threatens to sop funding universities over illegal protests.

For those of you who may have missed it, here’s part of Trudeau’s response to tariffs.
