European Fascists in Disarray over Trump's Heel Turn on Ukraine [1]

Raw Story has a piece up about how Trump’s abrupt about-face in foreign policy over Ukraine is not getting quite the reception he was hoping for among his far-right fan base among European fascists:

President Donald Trump's far-right European allies are rebuking the president's position on Ukraine and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, NBC News reports. Leaders across the continent are coming to Ukraine’s side and questioning Trump’s actions following the president's disastrous sit-down with Zelenskyy last week. Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right National Rally party called his diplomacy “brutal,” “cruel” and reprehensible,” in an interview with Le Figaro. Nigel Farage, a member of the United Kingdom Parliament, and long-time supporter of Trump also called out Vice President JD Vance’s recent attack on Britain as “wrong, wrong, wrong”. Vance on Monday claimed a minerals deal with the United States would guarantee Ukranian security better than "20,000 troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years.” The vice president denied he was talking about British of French troops with that remark. www.nbcnews.com/... Dutch anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders — often referred to as the “Dutch Trump” because of his flamboyant blond hair and anti-immigration politics — said Saturday that he stood by Ukraine “with conviction.” He reacted to Trump’s Oval Office clash with Zelenskyy by posting on X that it was “fascinating TV, but not necessarily the best way to end the war, gentlemen.”

Interesting how so many of Europe’s would-be fascist leaders are now choosing to line up with Italy’s Giorgia Meloni in supporting Ukraine’s existential fight for an independent existence rather than being one of Putin’s pawns like Hungary’s Victor Orban, Slovakia’s Robert Fico, or the German AfD’s Alice Weidel.

This is certainly a far cry from the annual convention of fringy far-right “populists” in Madrid last month in which the various national factions of fascists were celebrating Trump’s inauguration and his war on all things “woke.” Indeed, that honeymoon period of infatuation seems to have largely evaporated in the harsh light of what Trump’s foreign policy and trade agenda really means for the future of Europe — particularly if Putin is perceived as having won its war against Ukraine.
