That didn't take long: Bully/coward backing down on tariffs (update 01) [1]

Don’t look for Canada to become the 51st state any time soon, because the Tariffying Hammer of Doom that was supposed to pound our economy and population into meek, polite submission might be laid aside as soon as today due to stock markets taking a tariffic tumble that really was as predictable as the sun rising in the east.

NBC News reported Tuesday that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is now indicating that Trump may be willing to meet the leaders of Canada and Mexico "in the middle" following two consecutive disastrous days of trading. Lutnick's announcement that Trump would "probably" consider a compromise came after Trump re-introduced 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico after previously walking them back.
"Both the Mexicans and the Canadians are on the phone with me all day today, trying to show that they’ll do better," the commerce secretary told Fox Business. "And the president is listening because, you know, he’s very, very fair and very reasonable. So I think he’s going to work something out with them."
I don’t buy the second paragraph for one second. Nah, Justin Trudeau and Claudia Sheinbaum just sat back, watched the markets tick down and waited for the phone to ring.
I say this not only because the way to tell a Trumpling is lying is that his lips are moving. Sometime during the Q&A after his tariff-response speech yesterday, Trudeau actually alluded to it being possible that the tariffs would be gone a day or two after their start. I thought that was overoptimistic, and also that the glint in his eye when he said “We will win” at the end was a bit much... but, well, sun rising in the east...
Of course Crook-in-Chief wants a deal he can pretend is a victory to salvage that ego plus his fast-contracting reputation, while Justin knows that every red-blooded Canadian wants him to negotiate with a heart as cold and hard as centre ice. (“And now, you must: lick Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s toes. We flew him over especially.”)
All gloating fun aside, I reiterate the big truth underlying all this crap: the love the Canadian people has for the American people, forged by millions of personal connections across that longest undefended border, hasn’t gone away. Before something finally happens to bring this maniac and his all-sociopath crew down and put this crazy shitshow to bed, he’s going to do far worse damage to you than us, so we hope it happens as soon as humanly possible.
