Well, the orange ape has gone through with his tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China, and China was right on the ball and hit the U.S. with tariffs of its own against lots of American agricultural products such as soybeans. And if I am not mistaken, Mexico will be hitting American farmers as well with tariffs on such items as corn. Seeing as Kentucky, where I live, is very much an agricultural producing state with corn and soybeans being our largest crops, I was wondering, “What is the response from Republicans from Ag-states to Trump’s tariffs?” And I especially was curious to see what corn growners were thinking. And low and behold, I keep seeing this same sentence or variation of it being adopted by Republicans and corn growers.

“I’m concerned.”

Shades of Republican Senator Susan Collins of ME!

From Politico:

“I’m concerned,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said of the 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico that went into effect Tuesday after midnight. “I’m concerned.”… “I’m a farmer in real life, too,” said Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.). “It is something we’ll all have to weather, but ultimately the proceeds from the tariffs, he’s funneling a lot of that right back to agriculture. I think it’s kind of ‘wait and see’ a little bit as to how it plays out. It’s not terrible, you know, I mean, you hear a lot of concern out there, and a lot of times concerns are ‘what-ifs’ that never really come about.”

Now, several other Republicans used various other words to try and not be “alarmist” when it came to the oncoming pain American farmers are about to face. Well, there was actually one Republican who thought this was a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for American farmers!

Trump on Monday appeared to acknowledge the rising fears in farm country, addressing “the Great Farmers of the United States,” in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. “Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States,” he wrote. “Tariffs will go on external product on April 2nd. Have fun!”

Yes, I wonder how all those Kentucky farmers will feel about having to sell more corn and soybeans inside the U.S.?

Anyway, speaking of corn growers:

Corn growers are concerned about President Trump’s tariffs. On Tuesday, a 25% tariff took effect on most imports from Canada and Mexico, while tariffs on goods from China increase to 20%. Speaking to Brownfield at the 2025 Commodity Classic, National Corn Growers Association President Kenneth Hartman Jr. said he hopes the tariffs are a short-term issue. “We did a study with (American Soybean Association) that showed long term tariffs do cause issues when it comes to Brazil and Argentina taking away some of our customers,” Hartman said. “We have a lot of concerns with that.”

Emphasis is mine.

Yes, soybean farmers LOST markets to China because the Chinese turned toward Brazil and Argentina for their soybeans during the first tariff war. But we musn’t panic, or so Ag-state Republicans and farmer organizations want you to know. Not that it will upset the orange ape to tell the truth, but I suspect it would kill Republicans and farmers to admit they fucked up by supporting Trump.

Can’t let those damn libs be right you know!

Instead, Susan Collins typical response to when Republicans fuck up is all the rage: “I’m concerned.”
