Chicago Sun-Times: Lead Madigan prosecutor leaving U.S. attorney's office after more than two decades by Jon Seidel
The federal prosecutor who’s been a longtime driving force behind the corruption investigation that snared former Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan and ex-Chicago Ald. Edward M. Burke is leaving the U.S. Attorney’s office after a career spanning more than two decades. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amarjeet Bhachu is expected to leave the office March 14, according to office spokesman Joseph Fitzpatrick. Bhachu has also taken on mobsters and other criminals at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse, and he’ll end his tenure as chief of the U.S. Attorney’s Public Corruption and Organized Crime Section. “Amar Bhachu has served the citizens of Chicago and the United States with distinction,” Acting U.S. Attorney Morris “Sonny” Pasqual said in a statement. “Amar holds a rightful place on the list of distinguished assistant United States attorneys who have served in this district. He made our office better each and every day. I cannot thank Amar enough for his unwavering, humble leadership and wise counsel over the past 21 years, and I wish him the best going forward.”
New York Times: Florida Attorney General Opens Criminal Investigation Into Tate Brothers by Claire Moses
Florida’s attorney general on Tuesday opened a criminal investigation into Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate, the British American online influencers who face human-trafficking charges in Romania and Britain, after they arrived in the state last week. Attorney General James Uthmeier of Florida said in a statement on Tuesday that he had directed his office “to work with our law enforcement partners to conduct a preliminary inquiry into Andrew and Tristan Tate.” Mr. Uthmeier said in an exchange with a reporter posted to X that his office had “secured and executed subpoenas and warrants” in the criminal investigation into the Tate brothers. The brothers, who have millions of followers on social media and are known for their misogynistic views and excessive displays of wealth, had been barred from leaving Romania for more than two years after they were arrested there in 2022 on accusations of luring women to the country and sexually exploiting them.
CNN: Texas besieged by multiple fires as deadly storm fuels severe weather and blizzard conditions by May Gilbert, Artemis Moshtaghian, Karina Tsui, Robert Shackleford, and Zoe Sottile
A powerful storm is moving across the country and spawning multiple fires and severe thunderstorms with hurricane-force wind gusts and tornadoes that are knocking out power and causing damage Tuesday. At least two people have been reported dead due to storm-related incidents. Stretching from border to border, the storm in the central US is strengthening as it goes and putting tens of millions of people at risk of severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and fire weather on its warm, southern side, and blizzard conditions on its cold side in the Plains and Midwest. Here’s the latest: • Extreme fire risk: A level 3 of 3 extremely critical fire weather risk is in effect Tuesday for a large portion of Texas — including Austin and San Antonio — and part of southeastern New Mexico, according to the Storm Prediction Center. Powerful winds and very dry soil in the area are primed for “very rapid wildfire spread/extreme fire behavior,” the SPC warned. Fire departments were battling “multiple house fires” in far southern San Antonio Tuesday afternoon, as a wind-driven brush fire broke out and forced evacuations. At least 15 fires have been reported in the jurisdiction of the National Weather Service for Austin and San Antonio, which covers 33 counties, according to meteorologist Monte Oaks.
Guardian: Arab leaders endorse $53bn plan to rebuild Gaza as alternative to Trump idea by Oliver Holmes
Arab leaders have endorsed a $53bn (£42bn) plan to rebuild Gaza under the future administration of the Palestinian Authority (PA), in a rushed attempt to present an alternative to Donald Trump’s idea for a property development-style plan. Trump’s suggestion involved a relocation of the Palestinian population that has been widely criticised as effectively endorsing ethnic cleansing. The prospect of the PA governing Gaza remains far from certain, however, with Israel having ruled out any future role for the body, and Trump having closed the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) liaison office in Washington during his first term while stepping up support for Israel. In response, the Israeli foreign ministry said the reconstruction plan “failed to address” the realities of the situation following Hamas’ 7 October attack, adding that it did not mention the killing and kidnapping of Israelis during the attack or criticise Hamas.
DW: Mannheim: Mayor praises taxi driver who blocked attack by Roshni Majumdar
A cab driver of Pakistani origin played an important role in blocking the vehicle that deliberately crashed into people in the southwestern German city of Mannheim and killed at least two, the mayor of the city said on Tuesday. Christian Specht, the mayor, is a politician of the center-rightChristian Democratic Union (CDU), the party that came out on top of the German election race last month. He praised the cab driver at a service for the victims of the attack earlier this morning. "He behaved so courageously, drove after the perpetrator and ultimately blocked his vehicle to prevent further damage," Specht said about the cab driver. The cab driver had been living in Germany for 15 years and was a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community. "I was told that he says he acted so courageously as a Muslim and as a citizen," Specht told reporters.
Have the best possible evening everyone!
