Some Congressional Rs want to support Ukraine: how do we encourage them? [1]

I complain to my congressman a lot. He’s Juan Ciscomani, representing the 6th district in Arizona. A Republican, but not the absolute worst Republican. Of course, in Arizona, “worst Republican” has a lot of competition (Gosar, Biggs, Kari Lake to name just a few). He’s crossed the aisle several times to vote on bipartisan legislation, although I don’t think he’s ever done it just on his own.
Anyway, I wrote to complain to him about the current administration’s treatment of Ukraine.
His response — potentially hopeful — is below the fold (the bolding is mine):
March 3, 2025 Dear Ms. MY REAL NAME: Thank you for contacting my office, it is an honor to represent you in Congress. I am grateful you took the time to share your message regarding the ongoing efforts in Ukraine. It is important to hear directly from you in order to effectively represent Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. As your Representative, I understand the importance in defending democratic values around the world. The conflict in Ukraine is ongoing and it is crucial that we stand with our allies in the region to promote a peaceful and lasting resolution to the conflict. The Ukrainian people have demonstrated their commitment to democracy and freedom. I understand that there are differing opinions on how best to address the situation in Ukraine, but we must continue to work with our international partners to promote peace and stability in the region, and to hold accountable those who seek to undermine democratic institutions and principles. On April 20th, 2024, I was proud to vote in favor of H.R. 8035, the Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act. This important legislation provides funding for current U.S. military operations in the region and the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. It also includes provisions for replacing defense articles that were provided to Ukraine, reimbursing the Department of Defense (DOD) for defense services and training provided to Ukraine, support through the Foreign Military Financing Program, economic assistance for Ukraine, refugee and entrant assistance, international narcotics control and law enforcement, as well as the development and production of isotopes. As we continue to navigate these challenging times, I urge us all to remain vigilant in our efforts to protect democracy both at home and abroad. We must remain committed to upholding the values that make our nation, state, and district great, and to standing with those who share our commitment to freedom and justice. Please know that I will keep your comments in mind should any legislation regarding funding for Ukraine come before the U.S. House of Representatives. Thank you again for taking the time to reach out. Please stay in touch as we continue to move our district and nation forward. You can reach my office at 520-881-3588, 202-225-2542, or my website at Ciscomani.house.gov, where you can also subscribe to my free newsletter. Sincerely, SIGNED JUAN CISCOMANI
Weasel words, you may say? Well, Ciscomani supported Ukraine last year. In a paragraph above, he commends the Ukrainian people for their support of democracy.
So, does this mean anything?
Maybe. We’ve seen cracks as media such as the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal come down against the Russians.
We need to encourage it.
I suggest everyone, especially those in the following districts, contact their representatives (the list was put together to protect Medicaid but the same group is always the most vulnerable).
x 🚨If YOU live in 1 of these REPUBLICAN districts, these are the MOST vulnerable R's whose seats will be FLIPPED next year if they vote YES to cut Medicaid. Please CALL your representative the vote is TODAY & help SAVE MEDICAID. YOUR voice does matter and does make a DIFFERENCE. 202-224-3121.🚨 — Peter Morley 💙 ♿️ (@petermorley.bsky.social) 2025-02-25T13:04:19.260Z
Any other ideas on what to say? I plan to write back after seeing what people suggest, telling him to stand firm with democracy, and reminding him that he is supposed to represent the voters, not oligarchs and dictators.
Thanks, let’s keep up the pressure!
🐦 I do a lot of other writing. Newest offering! Messing with the Myths: The Maxotaur, the start of a really fun series. Older offerings: the Crow Nickels (chronicles), a trilogy about crows who want to save birdkind from extinction: Hunters of the Feather, Scavengers of Mind and Familiars of the Flock (They’re really good! They’re really cheap! Buy and review or rate positively! And Hunters is also available on Audible!) Other stories, based on Jane Austen novels — such as The Meryton Murders — and others based on history and Greek mythology, such as Jocasta: The Mother-Wife of Oedipus, can be found here. All titles are available through Kindle Unlimited, but I only get paid if you turn the pages.
