If this hasn’t happened already in the USA, it will. It’s just too attractive to the tax authorities to resist. Here’s what has happened in Mexico . Warning: much of what I write will be speculation. I’ll warn you in advance so you can make up your own mind.

First, the online market. I may have omitted one or more. Amazon Mexico, EBay, Mercado Libre, were the early ones. They’ve been joined by Temu, Shein, and AliExpress. Not only that but you can get Chinese companies to post you stuff direct.

It didn’t take long before a whole new user class of grifters developed. When you can buy a man’s hoodie for $1.50 carriage free, it’s tempting to buy 100 in different colours and sizes, set up a market rack and sell them on to the public, or on Etsy, or EBay, and then oh what’s this? Hey, drop shipping! Why take delivery at all? And of course this is the slippery slope you’re now on.

It’s so win-win! You have buyer protection so it’s low risk. It’s carriage free! And very, very CHEAP! Brick and mortar shops hate you but who cares?

The government cares. The tax department cares. They just hate to see citizens getting away making hundreds of percent profits tax free. And now, some bro has whispered in their ear. Some bro has written an app.

But first, a new law is passed. This law makes all these online marketers ask you, their customer, for your CURP or RFC, either of which identifies you for tax purposes. You cannot buy anything now without it. Life must have become difficult for all those here without proper documentation.

Here comes the speculative part:

I imagine that the marketing companies are required to send a log file in a specific format to the tax people. These are then combined so they can see the total purchase value per month, say. It would be simple to program the app to flag all accounts that exceed a given amount in any month. And very obvious who is making a load of money buying from China, shipping for free, and selling it on.
