My letter to Cornyn - I told him I was ashamed to be an American. [1]

I emailed Senator Cornyn when Musk first started getting up to his antics, not expecting such a detailed response. I’m guessing it was crafted by a member of his staff. I threw it immediately in the trash, but today I went and found it in the trash, and read it. Then I responded to it.
Senator Cornyn, you wrote: "DOGE has already highlighted several areas of concern. For example, the federal government has incurred approximately $2.7 trillion in payment errors since 2003, including overpayments and payments to ineligible recipients. In Fiscal Year 2023 alone, federal agencies made $236 billion in improper payments. Additionally, on average, federal agencies utilize only about 12% of the space in their headquarters buildings..." Currently DOGE only claims $55 billion saved, including 16.5 billion in contract cancellations. According to NPR the documented savings have been grossly overinflated, including an $8 billion typo and billions of dollars in contracts that were not actually terminated. This is nowhere near the $2.7 trillion you claim that DOGE has saved. NPR analysis shows that the total is approximately $2.3 billion. Even more ridiculous, many of these government agencies that DOGE is disbanding help to make the government better. You can't start taking pieces off a car and claim you're making it more safe. The brain drain of federal workers, the tariffs making cars, electronics and medication unaffordable, attacking health care for veterans, and damaging our reputation on the world stage by attacking our historical allies... all of it seems to be deliberately making America less great. It makes me ashamed to be an American. Thank you for your time. Respectfully, Jennifer Harrison.
Here’s the letter that his office sent me originally. The usual canned content, vetted and edited by his staffers into a reasonably inoffensive shape.
